Amy Johnson, 89

Funeral services for Amy Johnson were held on Monday, Oct. 27, 2003 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Dovray, MN.

Amy Ewen Johnson was born on July 15, 1914 in Currie, MN to Joseph and Florence (Thomas) Ewen. She grew up in Currie and graduated from IHM school in 1933.

Amy was united in marriage to Marlowe Johnson of Dovray on September 15, 1934 in Spencer, IA. They made their home on the Johnson family farm south of Dovray, where they raised their five children. In later years they built a home in Dovray where they lived for over 25 years, after which they moved to an apartment in Westbrook. Amy moved into the Westbrook Good Samaritan Center in December of 2000.

Amy loved cooking and baking, making corsages, dressing up on Halloween, working at the Dovray Cafe, and being a good neighbor. She was an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Dovray Legion Auxiliary, Senior Citizens Club, Virclamers Sewing Club and the Dovray Dumplings.

Amy passed away on October 22, 2003 at the Westbrook Good Samaritan Center at the age of 89 years, 3 months and 7 days surrounded by her family. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are her children and their spouses: John R. (Elaine) of Currie, Sandra (Bob) of Storden, Luverne (Lisa) of Slayton, Steve (Sue) of Dovray, Craig (Bernie) of Prior Lake; also 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Marlowe in 1997, her parents, seven siblings and infant son, a son-in-law, a grandson and a great-grandson.

Burial was in Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery in Dovray with arrangements being handled by the Westbrook Funeral Home.

Vivian J. Rykhus, 69

Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 25, 2003 at Zion Lutheran Church in Tracy for Vivian J. Rykhus. Reverend Kurt Kluge officiated. Soloist was Karl Baumann with Joanne Knott as organist.

Casket bearers were Greg Anderson, Joshua Rykhus, Dave Rykhus, Shawn Rykhus, Leo St. Pierre, Chris DeSmet. Honorary casket bearers were Douglas Rykhus, Daniel Rykhus and Lucas Rykhus.

Vivian Jane Rykhus was born May 16, 1934 to Arthur and Ida (Hagen) Petersen on a farm near Dunnel, MN, Martin County. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith and attended country school before moving with her family to a farm near the Tracy, MN area, where she attended Tracy High School and graduated in 1952.

On March 15, 1954 Vivian married Donald Rykhus at the Tracy United Methodist Church. They made their home on a farm east of Tracy and in 1962 moved into Tracy. Vivian worked at the egg plant in Marshall, MN and later as a dietitian at the Christian Manor Nursing Home in Tracy from the early 1980's until her retirement in 1999.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the church's women's group. She currently was the vice-president and past president of the Tracy VFW Auxiliary and a member of the Tracy Prime Timers. Vivian enjoyed flower gardening, country music, traveling and most of all spending time with her family.

On Tuesday, October 21, 2003 Vivian died at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 69.

Vivian is survived by one daughter, Sharon (Jim) Anderson of Owatonna, MN; five sons, Steven (JoAnn) of New Ulm, MN, Terry (Patty) of Chandler, AZ, Scott (LaVonne) of Sartell, MN, Kevin (Lynda) of New Ulm, MN and Brian of Mesa, AZ; two sisters, LaVon Egge of Tracy, MN and Barbara DeSmet of Omaha, NE; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her parents, husband, Donald, one daughter, Stacey Jo, and five brothers preceded her in death.

Burial was in the Tracy City Cemetery with the Almlie Funeral Home of Tracy handling the arrangements.

Laura Van Meveren, 82

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003 for Laura M. Van Meveren, age 82 of Tracy, at the Tracy Alliance Church in Tracy. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church on Thursday.

Laura M. VanMeveren was born June 17, 1921 to Harry and Mary (Greenbush) Cowell on a farm north of Lake Wilson (Murray County) Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith and attended country school. Laura grew up on farms in the and around the Lake Wilson area prior to moving with her family to Tracy, MN in the late 1930's. As a young girl she was a waitress in the Tracy Train Depot and the Red Rooster Cafe in Tracy.

On June 12, 1948 Laura married Earl “Ike” E. Van Meveren in Tracy. They made their home in Tracy where Laura worked at the Tracy Hospital as a cook from 1965 to early 1990's. In February of 2002 Laura moved into the Twin Circle Apartments in Tracy and in May of 2003 the Springside Assisted Living in Tracy.

Laura was a member of the Tracy Alliance Church, Tracy VFW Auxiliary and the Tracy Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed crocheting and volunteering at the Tracy Hospital Snack Bar and Tracy Clothing Center, but what she really loved was cooking, especially baked beans and chocolate chip cookies for her family.

On Monday, October 27, 2003 Laura died at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 82.

Laura is survived by two daughters, Kathleen (Jeffrey) Condon of Rosemount, MN and Rebecca (James) Ellingson of Tracy, MN; five sons, Ronnie (Carol) Ball of Duluth, MN, Roger Ball of Tracy, MN, David (LeAnn) Van Meveren of Slayton, MN, Curtis Van Meveren of Marshall, MN and James (Janice) Van Meveren of Slayton, MN, Curtis Van Meveren of Marshall, MN and James (Janice) Van Meveren of Monticello, MN; 19 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Sammons of Tracy, MN and Dorothy Smith of Burbank, CA; two brothers, Donald Cowell of Slayton, MN and Eldon “Sonny” Cowell of Magnolia, MN; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her parents, husband, Earl, one infant son and one brother, Leo, preceded her in death.

Interment will be in the Tracy City Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Almlie Funeral Home of Tracy.
