Joseph P. Smarzik, 98

Funeral services were held Saturday, December 6, 2003 for Joseph P. Smarzik at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Tracy, MN. Father Brian Mandel officiated. Organist was Vicki Guetter with Deanna Edwards as soloist. Eugolgists were Rev. Homer Dobson, David Anderson and Deanna Edwards. Readers were Tiffany Perish and Amanda Bristlin.

Casket bearers were Ross Perish, Carl Pfeifle, Ron Perish, Mark Perish, Myron Perish and Deric Perish.

Joseph Paul Smarzik was born September 4, 1905 to Anton and Stella (Novotsky) Smarzik in Orleans MN, Kitsin County. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith and attended country school. He moved to the Tracy, MN area with his family in 1917.

On May 2, 1934 Joe married Frances Thompson in Tracy at St. Mary's Catholic Church. He farmed for many years and also worked for the railroad and Tracy Bottling Company. Joe also ran a root beer stand at Tepeeotah, was an iceman and in later years he was a carpenter, ran a second hand store and was a jack of all trades.

Joe was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church. He enjoyed going to auctions and sales and was a hard worker all of his life.

About five years ago Joe moved to Walnut Grove, MN and in November of 2003 he became a resident of the Valley View Manor in Lamberton, MN. On Thursday, November 27, 2003 Joe died at the Springfield Medical Center in Springfield, MN at the age of 98.

Joe is survived by two daughters; Mary Ann Camp of Malawi (a country in Central Africa) and Jo Ann (Joseph) Perish of Verndale, MN; one daughter-in-law, Doris Smarzik of Rock Hill, SC; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

His parents, one son, Robert, three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery with the Almlie Funeral Home handling arrangements.

Madonna “Donna” Thieren, age 76, of Tracy passed away Tuesday, December 9, 2003.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Tracy. Visitation will be held on hour prior to services at the church. Interment is in the church cemetery.
