Spikers hope to surpass `99 section runner-up trophy

The Panther volleyball team began two-a-day workouts Monday preparing for this year's schedule.

"We have a big job finding replacements for last year's seniors," said Panther Coach Katie Gervais. "Steph Welvaert handled 80% of our passes so we have to work hard on our passing."

The Panthers were the Section 3A runner-up last fall, finish second to Jackson County Central.

"One of the things that bothered me last year was that many of our players seemed to be very happy with that second-place finish," said Assistant Coach Paul Soupir.

Lost from last year's squad are Julie Gifford, Debbie Gabel, Jenna Boerboom and DeAnn Johnson. Additionally, one of the team's captains-elect, Laura Miller, has decided not to compete this year.
