Violet House, 90

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 4, 2001 at the United Methodist Church in Slayton for Violet House. Rev. Dennis Itzen officiated. Organist was Janet Voges with special music by Colleen Miller.

The pallbearers were Jack Taylor, Tony Taylor, Kenneth Vanderlinden, Gene Torness, Melvin Ingalls and Dale Zieman.

Violet Rosella House was born May 29, 1910 at Westfield, Iowa to John and Susan Steesey Skogsberg. In 1918 the family moved to a farm near Reliance, SD. Vi attended Rosebud District 55 School in Lyman Co., SD, graduated from Reliance High School in 1929 and earned her teaching certification from Normal School in Spearfish, SD.

Before her marriage, Vi worked in Sioux City, IA. On February 24, 1936, she and Raymond House were married at Elk Point, SD. They lived at Westfield, IA until 1937 when they moved to Murray County, MN. They lived in Lowville Twp. in the Bear Lake area until 1944. They moved to a farm in Lime Lake Twp. and lived there until 1970 when they moved to Slayton. In August 1997 they moved into the Sunrise Terrace Apartments.

Vi was a resident of Slayton Manor Care Center for about six weeks before she passed away there on April 30, 2001 at the age of 90.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church where she was active in the U.M.W. and had served as president, and in the Lydia-Naomi Circle. She belonged to the Goodwill Extension Club for many years and had held several offices in the Eastern Star. Vi enjoyed sewing, gardening, baking bread, reading, raising house plants and spending time with her family and many friends.

Vi is survived by her husband, Ray House of Slayton; a son, Jerry House of Vader, WA; her daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Earl Johnson of Slayton; five grandchildren: Scott House, Shari Zieman, Tony Johnson, Allan Johnson and Chad Johnson; six great-grandchildren: Bradley and Jessica Zieman, T.J. Johnson, Tucker Johnson, Thomas Johnson and David Johnson; two sisters: Anne Torness of Milbank, SD and Edith Taylor of Sioux City, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Neil Skogsberg, a grandson, Paul House and a great-granddaughter, Olivia Johnson.

Interment was in the Slayton Memorial Gardens, Slayton, MN.

Totzke Funeral Home of Slayton handled arrangements.

John Schaefer, 67

Services for John “Jack” Schaefer of Tracy, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 10 at the Tracy Lutheran Church in Tracy. Burial will be in the Grandview Cemetery in Gary, SD at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. Wednesday, May 9 at Hamilton-Birk Funeral Home in Marshall with a prayer service at 8:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Thursday, one hour prior to the services.

Jack died Saturday, May 5, at the Tracy Hospital.
