Manley Rolland, 83

Funeral services for Manley O. Rolland will be held on Thursday, May 17, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Milroy. Reverend Stephen Olson and Reverend Jeffrey Engholm will officiate. Soloist is Leonard Olson with Dona Petersen as organist.

Casket bearers are Paul Rolland, Chad Rolland, Curt Rolland, Eric Rolland, Robert Rolland, Steve Rolland and Troy Rolland.

Honorary casket bearers are Sheila Stock, Lisa Kowalczyk, Shelly Rolland, Jennifer Olenik, Cindy Rolland, Melissa Rolland and Jennifer Kochaive.

Honor Guard will be the American Legion Post 274 of Milroy.

Manley Osborne Rolland was born May 28, 1917 to Osborne and Olga (Olson) Rolland at Milroy, MN. He grew up in the Milroy area and attended Milroy public school.

Manley and Vivian Johnson were married at Brookings, SD on October 15, 1938. They lived for a time in Marshall where Manley worked for the Lyon County Co-op Creamery.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. Following his military services he returned to the Milroy area where he began farming and he and Vivian raised their seven sons. During his years on the farm he also was a truck driver for Nackerud Trucking Company in Tracy.

After retiring from farming Manley and Vivian moved into Tracy to live.

Manley was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith and was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Milroy. He also attended Tracy Lutheran Church after they moved to Tracy.

Manley was a member of the Milroy American Legion Post #274, Tracy Country Club and Farmer's Union.

He enjoyed his family, golfing and spending the winter months in their Mesa home.

Manley died on Friday, May 11, 2001 at Mesa General Hospital, Mesa, AZ at the age of 83 years.

Manley is survived by his wife, Vivian; five sons and their spouses, Robert and Kathy of Mesa, AZ, Richard and Ardace of Minneapolis, MN, Larry and Peggy of Milroy, MN, Doug and Gail of Willmar, MN and Dale and Bette of Apache Junction, AZ; one sister, June and husband John Taylor of Baton Rouge, LA; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

His parents, two sons, David and Terry, one granddaughter, Elizabeth, and one sister, Lila preceded him in death.

Burial will be at Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery, Milroy, MN with the Almlie Funeral Home of Tracy handling arrangements.

Wanda Kern, 67

Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 10, 2001 for Wanda Kern at the Cross of Calvary Lutheran Church in Olivia, MN. Rev. Ronald Hackmann officiated. Burial was at the Olivia Cemetery. Dirks-Blem Funeral Service handled the arrangements.

Wanda Kern was born March 17, 1934 at Maynard, MN to Joseph and Guida (Thorson) Haugen. She was baptized on May 6, 1934 at Wang Lutheran Church, rural Maynard and confirmed there on May 29, 1949.

Wanda attended rural Maynard School and graduated from Sacred Heart High School. She then earned her LPN degree at Charles T. Miller School of Nursing in St. Paul, MN.

On March 27, 1954 she was united in marriage to Douglas Kern at Wang Lutheran Church. Wanda resided with her parents while Doug served in Guam and upon his return they made their home on the farm south of Olivia.

In 1987 they retired to Danube. Wanda was employed as a nurse at Miller Hospital in St. Paul and later at the Renville County Hospital in Olivia.

She was a lifelong member of the Olivia Lioness, a faithful member of Cross of Calvary Lutheran Church, and belonged to the Ecumenical Bible Study Group in Danube as well as other bible studies at her church. She was also a member of the Renville County Home Extension Group, two birthday clubs and was a Red Cross volunteer.

Wanda and Doug hosted the midwinter seminar for foreign exchange students for 26 years. Wanda's family also fondly remembers how she enjoyed reading and what a great conversationalist she was.

Wanda died at her home, surrounded by her family, early Tuesday morning, May 8, 2001.

Wanda is survived by her husband, Doug, her two sons and their wives, Jeff and Janece Kern of Olivia and Danny and LuAnn Kern of Tracy; her four grandchildren, Michael, Joseph, Jacob and Anna Kern, her sister Lorraine (and Bob) Stevens of Valentine, NE and her brother, Dean Haugen of Maynard.

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents.
