Hazel Polzine, 80

Hazel E. Polzine, age 80, of Worthington, died Sunday, October 28, 2001, at the Worthington Regional Hospital. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Friday at the Dingmann Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Worthington and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at the First Lutheran Church in Worthington, with Rev. Rich Ricker officiating.

She was born August 5, 1921 in Lake City, IA to Gus and Mabel (Brush) Holm. Hazel moved to Brewster, MN with her family in 1932; and graduated from Brewster High School in 1939.

Hazel married Julius Polzine on October 24, 1941, in Dakota City, NE. After their marriage, the couple lived in Worthington, where Hazel worked at Boote's Hatchery; later, Farmers Produce; and finally, Campbell's Soup Company. She retired in 1983.

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, in Worthington. Hazel enjoyed fishing and playing cards.

Hazel is survived by her three children and their spouses, Bonnalynn “Bonnie” and Alfred Mejia, Worthington; Donald and Sandy Polzine, Tracy; and Janice “Jan” and David Hoefker, Worthington; six grandchildren, Melissa (Kirk) Whiting, Madonna (Pat) Peterson, Steven (Cori) Mejia, Jason Johnson, Todd Mejia and Jessica (Nathan) Moretter; five step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and 18 step great-grandchildren; and a sister, Phyllis White, Brandon, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Julius, in 1990; and two sisters, Ila Spessard and Fern Morrison.

Hazel E. Swanson, 89

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Balaton for Hazel E. Swanson. Pastor Steven Quist officiated. Soloist was Geneva Swan and Lisa Parker as organist.

Casket bearers were Scott Swanson, Joel Swanson, Kevin Swanson, Kyle Swanson, Randy Kirk, Bradley Kirk, Tim Kirk, Chad Smith and Dan Moon.

Hazel Eleanor Swanson was born July 5, 1912 to Nels and Mathilda (Shober) Hanson in rural Balaton, Minnesota. She attended rural public schools.

She was married to Palmer Swanson on May 6, 1931 in Balaton. They farmed most of their lives on the Swanson farm near Balaton until 1962 when they moved into Balaton. Hazel was then employed by the Balaton Public School as a cook where she worked until retirement.

She enjoyed music, playing cards and visiting with her many friends. She especially enjoyed baking and taking it to people who were sick or new in the area. Her husband, Palmer died on April 22, 1997.

Hazel was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and had been active in the Ladies Aid. She had also been a member of a card club and Thimble club.

Hazel was a resident of the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Balaton, and it was there that she died on Wednesday, October 24, 2001 at the age of 89.

She is survived by one son, Dale and his wife Janice of Pipestone, MN; three daughters and their husbands, Sharon and Jim Sanford of New Ulm, MN, Marlene and LeRoy Moon of Chisago City, MN, Debra and Wade Smith of Pipestone, MN; daughter-in-law, Mary Anne Swanson of Inver Grove Heights, MN; 15 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Viola Hanson of Slayton, MN; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Myron and Ruth Swanson of Balaton, MN; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her parents, husband, one son, Darvin, two brothers, Gordon and Harry, one infant brother, one sister, Dorothy Marquardt, son-in-law, Claire Kirk, two half brothers, Karl and John Knudson and half sister, Helen West preceded her in death.

Burial was at Sillerud Cemetery, Balaton, MN with the Almlie Funeral Home of Balaton handling arrangements.
