Marie Quisley, 93

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 2, 2005 for Marie Christine Quisley at Christ Lutheran Church in Slayton. Rev. Dan DeBlock officiated. Organist was Twyla Hungerford with special music by Lydia Mittag. Reader was LaRita Velure.

The pallbearers were David Erickson, Brian Matson, Marvin ferguson, Karl Ruppert, Tim Gass and Brad Gass.

Christine Quisley was born on January 15, 1912 in Kalispell, Montana, the only child of Ole and May Toner Broten. She was baptized and confirmed at the Norwegian Lutheran Church in Slayton. She attended country school in western Montana, studied for one year at Slayton High School and graduated from Conrad High School in Montana in 1930. She then worked summers at Glacier National Park and winters at the Blackfoot Indian Agency in Browning, MT. She played in a string orchestra, enjoyed family gatherings, and rodeos while living there.

She moved to Minnesota in 1934 and met Burt Quisley. They were married at Northwood, IA on February 28, 1935. Following their marriage they farmed the Quisley family farm east of Slayton. They farmed there until Burt’s health failed. Burt passed away on December 31, 1993. Christine continued living on the farm and moved into Slayton to the Westside Apartments. Due to failing health, she entered the Slayton Manor Care Center on October 4, 2003 and she passed away there on May 4, 2005 at the age of 93 years.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church where she had served as unit leader, secretary-treasurer and historian. She loved the outdoors, kept a big yard and garden, and enjoyed canning the garden produce, cooking and baking, especially Scandinavian food. Crafts, writing letters, family genealogy and traveling with her husband, were some of Christine’s favorite pastimes.

Survivors include her aunt, Mabel Greig of Slayton, MN, cousins, Marilyn (Dick) Robillard of Slayton, Marlys (Ted) Kranz of Fridley, MN, Eleanor (Albert) Berglund of Iona, Sam (Connie) Toner of Slayton, Charles (Jerri) Toner of Aurora, CO, Frank (Bernice) Gass of Slayton, Duane (Donna) Gass of Minneapolis, MN, Evangeline (Roger) Wagley of Glenwood, MN, and Rachel (William) Blackwell of Orange, CA; and their families. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband, Burt.

Interment was at the Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery in rural Avoca, MN with the Totzke Funeral Home of Slayton handling the arrangements.
