Marshall tourney tests Legion

The Milroy Legion baseball team went winless at the Marshall Tournament over the weekend, losing to Shakopee, St Cloud, Wahpeton and Marshall.

 

Shakopee 7, Milroy 5

In the first game against Shakopee, on Friday, Milroy lost 7-5 in 12 innings. The game lasted until 11:35 p.m.

“Both teams had chances to win,” said Coach Derek Flann. “We had 2 innings where we had to score to keep the game going and did. They made one more play than we did in the end.”

Donald Strand led the offense with a pair of singles. Matt Bauer started on the mound for Milroy and pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up 4 runs on 5 hits while striking out 7 and walking 5. Anthony Rohlik pitched the next 4 1/3 innings giving up 1 run on 2 hits while striking out 4 and walking 2. Derek Daniels finished the game by pitching the last inning and gave up 2 runs on 2 hits while striking out 2 and walking 3.

In the second game, on Saturday Milroy lost to St Cloud 8-1.

“We were very tired from our game the night before,” said Coach Flann. “The kids gave it everything they had, they were just tired. We never caught our breath the rest of the weekend.”

Donald Strand again led the attack as he went 2 for 3 with Brett Jackson and Sean Castle providing the other Milroy hits.

Castle pitched the first 4 innings and gave up 4 runs on 5 hits while striking out 2 and walking 4. Lucas Walling pitched the last 2 innings and gave up 4 runs (none earned) on 3 hits while striking out 1 and walking none.

Brett Jackson and Sean Castle led in hitting with 2 hits each while Donald Strand, Matt Bauer and Anthony Rohlik also collected hits.

Derek Daniels pitched the next 2 innings giving up 4 runs on 6 hits while striking out none and walking 3. Lucas Walling finished the game giving up 1 run on 2 hits while striking out 1 and walking none.

Andy Nelson led the attack with a 2 for 2 day at the plate. Taylor Rignell started on the mound for Milroy and pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up 9 runs on 5 hits while striking out none and walking 6. Sean Castle finished by pitching 1 2/3 innings and giving up 2 runs on 2 hits while striking out 1 and walking 2.

Wild pitch bottom of 7 is difference in Appleton win

The Milroy Legion baseball team beat Appleton 7-6 at Milroy Thursday.

“We won the game on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning,” said Milroy Coach Derek Flann.

Sean Castle led the 11 hit Milroy attack with 3 hits while Matt Bauer and Derek Radke had 2 each.

Radke started on the mound for Milroy and pitched 4 innings giving up 3 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits while striking out 3 and walking 3. Sean Castle pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief and gave up 3 runs on 1 hit while striking out 1 and walking 4. Anthony Rohlik finished the game by giving up no runs on 1 hit, striking out none and hitting one batter.

Polzine leading VFW hitters

The Tracy VFW baseball team now has a season record of 7 wins and 3 losses and is 3-1 in the league. The team is coached by Bob and Neil Dolan and has a roster that includes Casey Polzine, Cody Schons, Taylor Hagberg, Anthony Dolan, Isaac Dolan, John Gervais, Brian Slager, Chris Swenson, David McCoy, Ryan Thooft, David Schmidt, Taylor Rignell, Ryan Kaup, Spencer Zwaschka, Kyle Fraser, Dan Dieter, Eric Lanoue and Logan Sanow.

Casey Polzine is leading in hitting with a .462 average and is followed by Cody Schons at .333, Taylor Hagberg at .313, Anthony Dolan at .308, Isaac Dolan at .278, John Gervais at .267 plus Brian Slager and Chris Swenson at .258.

Taylor Rignell is leading in pitching with an earned run average of 3.48. He is followed by Isaac Dolan at 3.57, David Schmidt at 5.07, Anthony Dolan at 5.11, Chris Swenson at 5.40 and Brian Slager at 8.59.

The VFW team opened the season with a 5-6 loss to Sacred heart, won over Heron Lake 13-7, won over Redwood Falls 12-11, won over Granite Falls 12-6, lost to Pipestone 13-1, won over Jackson 12-2, lost to Luverne 8-3, won over Westbrook-Walnut Grove 10-9 and won twice over Heron Lake 12-2 and 3-0.
