Legion advances in tourney play

The Milroy Legion baseball team advanced to the district tournament in Pipestone Friday and Saturday, July 21-22, with a 2-1 win over Springfield Friday.

Pairings and game times of the tournament had not been announced at press time.

Matt Bauer pitched a complete game in the victory over Springfield. He gave up 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 7 and walking 6.

Derek Daniels led the 6 hit Milroy attack with a pair of hits and a run batted in. Milroy scored twice in the fourth inning when Matt Bauer reached on an error, Anthony Rohlik drove him in with a double and Daniels’ single scored Rohlik for the winning run.

Milroy 5, Mt. Lake 0

The Milroy Legion baseball team opened the playoffs with a 5-0 win over Mountain Lake at Milroy last Wednesday.

“We played very well in our first playoff game,” said Milroy Coach Derek Flann. “Anthony (Rohlik) pitched an outstanding game, we made all the plays defensively and we got some clutch hits that scored our runs.”

Bauer led the eight-hit Milroy attack with 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate and driving in 3 runs. Andy Nelson added 2 hits and Lucas Walling also had a pair of runs batted in.

Rohlik went all the way on the mound for Milroy giving up no runs on only one hit while striking out 8 and walking none.

“Rohlik faced 22 hitters, made 84 pitches and allowed only one baserunner in seven innings,” said Flann. “The only hit Mt Lake had was a bloop single into right field.”

Windom 21, Milroy 9

On Saturday, July 16 the Milroy Legion baseball team lost to Windom 21-9 at Springfield in a game shortened by the 10 run rule.

Windom had their hitting shoes on and there was nothing Milroy could do about it. Windom outhit Milroy 16 to 10 and scored six runs in the first inning. Milroy used three pitchers, Derek Daniels started and pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up 6 runs on 6 hits while striking out 1 and walking none. He was relieved by Sean Castle who pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up 9 runs on 4 hits while striking out 1 and walking 5. Lucas Walling finished the game by pitching 1 2/3 innings and giving up 6 runs on 6 hits while striking out none and walking 3.

Milroy came back and scored 9 runs in the fourth and fifth innings but it was too little, too late. Matt Bauer led the 10 hit attack with 3 hits and a pair of runs batted in.

Milroy lost to Jackson at Springfield by a score of 8-7.

“We started out very well, but we let them gain momentum and get back in the game,” said Coach Flann. “Radke threw a good game but our defense let him down.”

Derek Radke pitched the whole game giving up 8 runs ( 3 earned) on 11 hits while striking out 6 and walking 6.

Sean Castle led the Milroy attack with 3 hits while Radke and Jackson had 2 each. Bauer had 4 runs batted in when he scored three runs with a bases loaded double in the first inning.

Tracy beats Marshall to top softball tourney

Tracy topped a five-team fast-pitch softball tournament for 12-year-old girls in Marshall Saturday.

Tracy claimed their championship with a 10-7 victory over Marshall Black.

Earlier in the day, Marshall Black had opened “pool play” with a 10-6 game over Tracy. Pool play games determined the seeding for subsequent tournament-round games.

After losing their opening pool play game, Tracy rebounded to beat the Willmar Lightning 8-7. Tracy defeated the Willmar Wild 21-6 in semi-final action.


Tracy VFW is off to good start

The Tracy VFW baseball team won its opening game in the sub-district with a 13-3 victory over Olivia at Tracy Monday evening. The win improved Tracy’s record to 14-6. Tracy began the tournament has the second-seeded team in sub-district.

The double elimination tournament will continue Thursday evening with Tracy playing either Sacred Heart or Granite Falls at Tracy and then continuing in Milroy over the weekend.

Isaac Dolan took the mound for Tracy Monday and pitched all five innings in the game shortened by the 10 run rule. Dolan held Olivia to 3 runs and only 2 hits.

VFW goes 1-1 heading into tournament

Marshall beat Tracy 11-0 in a July 8 make up game. Getting hits for Tracy were David Schmidt (2), Chris Swenson, Isaac Dolan and Brian Schlager.

Isaac Dolan was the starting pitcher for Tracy, before being relieved by Anthony Dolan in the seventh.
