Mistakes costly in opening loss to Canby

By Dick Donaldson

The Tracy/Milroy/Balaton football team opened the 2005 season with a loss to Canby 15-0 Thursday night at Tracy. The Panthers’ initiation into the Little Sioux Conference was a tough one as the Lancers, who were 0-9 and 0-7 in the conference last year, shut down the Panther offense.

“Our defense is the strength of our team and they played very well tonight,” said Lancer Coach and 1989 Tracy grduate Scott Snobl. “The kids came into camp this fall in good shape, with a good attitude and worked hard. The score we got early in the second period gave us confidence and that helped a lot also.”

“They are a good team,” said Panther Coach Randy McIntire. “Their defensive line was very good, led by Evan Hacker, listed as 290 pounds, the state heavyweight wrestling champion. I thought we had good size in our offensive line but their defensive line was much bigger.”

The game started well for TMB when Canby, after receiving the opening kickoff, had to put the ball in play on its own 8-yard line. The Lancers chose to use the old flea flicker pass on the first play and it was intercepted by TMB’s Drew Nelson and returned to the Canby 31. Running Back Travis Cambronne got a nice gain down to Canby’s 7 yard line but a motion penalty followed and the Panthers were forced to try a 26 yard field goal on fourth down which was wide right.

Following a blocked Panther punt early in the second period the Lancers took a 7-0 lead and you could sense their confidence grow. The punting of Erik Stewart kept the Panthers in their own territory and another Canby touchdown, in the third period, sealed the win for the Lancers.

Matt Bauer’s opening kickoff went deep into Canby territory and, after a holding penalty Canby put the ball in play on their own 8-yard line. The first down pass was intercepted by TMB’s Drew Nelson at the Canby 31. Three carries by Seth Swan netted 9 yards and Travis Cambronne carried to the Canby 7 on 4th down. On the first play of the second series the Panthers were penalized back to the 12-yard line. Swan picked up 6 yards on two carries but quarterback Tristan Larson was sacked for a three-yard loss and the field goal attempt failed.

The Lancers took over on the 20-yard line and reeled off two first downs before punting from the 36. Stewart’s 42 yard punt forced TMB to start from it’s own 24 yard line. Two running plays produced 13 yards but a penalty forced a punt from the 31-yard line.

Canby was forced to punt as the second period began and the Panthers started on their own 34-yard line. Two running plays gained six yards but a sack made it fourth and 12 on the 32. Derek Daniels’ punt was blocked with the Lancers gaining control on TMB’s 35-yard line. A running play picked up 15 yards to the 20 and, on third down, Logan Oellien’s pass to Justin Girard was good for a touchdown. When Girard’s kick was good Canby led 7-0 with 7:27 remaining in the second period.

TMB returned the kickoff to the 25-yard line but were held to 3 yards in three plays and had to punt. Spencer Zwaschka’s kick went out of bounds at mid-field and Canby marched, in 10 plays, to TMB’s 22-yard line before the Panthers took the ball over on downs just before the half ended.

Second half

Nelson returned the second half kickoff to the TMB 26 but the first down pass was intercepted on the Panthers’ 47-yard line. The Lancers then marched, in 8 plays, to the Panthers’ 15 before fumbling. The Panthers couldn’t move the ball and had to punt from the 10-yard line. Canby took over on their own 47 yard line but could gain only 3 yards in 3 plays and had to punt. Stewart’s kick was returned to the Panther 8-yard line and TMB fumbled on the first play with the Lancers recovering on the 4-yard line. On the second play Oellien scored from the one and his pass to Girard gave Canby a two-point conversion. With 2:56 left in the third period the Lancers lead climbed to 15-0.

Chris Swenson returned the ensuing kickoff 31 yards to TMB’s 49-yard line. The Panthers got a first down on the Canby 35 and another on the 21 yard line, but then fumbled with the Lancers taking over on their own 18 as the fourth quarter began. The Lancers moved to their own 34 before punting.

Two incomplete passes and a 3 yard run gave TMB fourth and 7 on their own 21 yard line. Isaac Dolan went back to pass and hit Daniels with a 43-yard strike that carried to the Canby 36-yard line. However on the second play the Panthers lost a fumble on the Canby 37 yard line. TMB held and, when the fourth down pass from center went over Stewart’s head the Panthers took possession on Canby’s 15-yard line. Four plays later the Panthers surrendered the ball on downs at the Canby 19 yard line. The Lancers then picked up two first downs on 5 plays as time ran out.

The Panthers were held to only 70 yards rushing in 34 carries and 43 yards passing for 113 yards of total offense. Canby gained 149 yards rushing in 42 carries and 20 yards passing for a total of 169 yards. Seth Swan led the Panthers with 60 yards rushing in 14 carries. Freshman Isaac Dolan, who played the second half at quarterback, had one completion in 7 attempts for 43 yards. Daniels had the only reception.

Paul Carlson led the defense with 11 tackles, 1 fumble recovery and 1 sack while Matt Bauer had 9 tackles and a sack. Daniels had 6 tackles, David Schiller 6 and a sack, Sean Fox and Gary Knott 5 each, Kyle McIntire 4 1/2, Travis Cambronne and Chris Swenson 3 each, Erik Frisvold, Derrick Vandromme and Pheng Her 2 each, Drew Hebig, Drew Nelson and Matt Rosa 1 each, while Cody Arnold and Andy Nelson each. Drew Nelson also had a pass interception.
