Homecoming heartbreak

Blackjacks gain nearly 400 yards in 30-21 win

By Dick Donaldson

The Tracy/Milroy/Balaton Panther football team lost to the Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks 30-21 at Tracy Friday night. The loss dropped TMB’s record to 1-4. The win was the first of the season for the Blackjacks.

The Panthers scored first marching 34 yards on nine plays for a touchdown on their first possession. The drive was set up by a David Schmidt’s interception.

The Blackjacks then showed their determination to break into the win column by running 27 plays to only 14 for TMB in the remainder of the first half. The 27 plays produced 22 points to 8 for the Panthers and gave the Blackjacks a 22-15 halftime lead. The lead would have been 22-7 except for a last second 62 yard scoring pass from freshman Isaac Dolan to Kyle McIntire.

The Panthers scored early in the third period to bring the score to 22-21. Seth Swan was stopped on the goal line on the two-point play, leaving TMB trailing 22-21. The Blackjacks scored another touchdown to make it a 9-point (2 possession) lead.

“It was pure frustration,” said Panther Coach Randy McIntire. “We had people in the right spots in this game. They just didn’t make the play.”

First half

The game began with TMB kicking off and D-B moving to a first down on the Panther 48-yd line. On the third play of the next series David Schmidt intercepted a D-B pass and returned it to the D-B 34-yd line. In nine running plays TMB scored on a 6-yd burst by Seth Swan and Derrik Vandromme’s kick gave TMB a 7-0 lead with 3:41 remaining in the first period.

After kicking to D-B, the Blackjacks kept the ball for 14 plays and scored with 9:59 left in the first half. The pass for a 2-point conversion failed and the Panthers kept the lead 7-6.

The teams then traded interceptions and TMB took over on its own 5-yd line. On the Panthers second play D-B’s Luke Bothun intercepted a Panther pass and returned it for a touchdown giving D-B it’s first lead at 14-7 when the pass for a 2 point conversion was good.

After receiving the following kick off TMB moved to two first downs before punting. The Blackjacks put the ball in play on their own 16 and, with the help of 3 passes for a total of 76 yards, moved to another score in 10 plays. Again the 2 point conversion was good and the Blackjacks increased their lead to 22-7 with only 11.7 seconds remaining in the second period.

The Panther fans gave up hope at that point but were re-energized when Dolan’s pass to McIntire was good for a Panther touchdown on the last play of the first half. When Swan’s run for the 2-point conversion was good the Panthers were back in the game 22-15 at the intermission.

Second half

As the third quarter began both teams suffered interceptions after which the Panthers put the ball in play on their own 31-yd line. Three running plays by Swan, the last for 57 yards, gave TMB a touchdown to bring the score to 21-22. With 8:02 left in the third period Swan was stopped just short of the goal line in the conversion try and the Blackjacks kept the lead.

When they received the following kickoff the Blackjacks showed their resolve by marching 74 yards in 6 plays to the clinching score. The conversion was good and D-B led 30-21 with 5:38 left in the third period.

The Panthers only two possessions in the fourth period ended with an interception and a fumble lost. Meanwhile the Blackjacks controlled the ball for 27 plays on two possessions to run out the clock and seal the win.

Paul Carlson again led the Panther defense with 12 tackles plus 2 sacks. Matt Bauer and Chris Swenson followed with 9 each (plus a sack by Bauer), David Schiller 8 -1/2 plus an interception), Dan Deiter 8, Kyle McIntire7, Sean Fox and Kirby Arens 6-1/2 each, Drew Hebig 6, David Schmidt 5 (plus 3 interceptions), Derrik Vandromme 2 1/2. (plus a sack), Derek Daniels and Tyler Bauer 2 each, Andy Nelson, Nick Soupir and Erik Frisvold 1 each, Brady Jackson and Erich Swenson 1/2 each.

The Panthers rushed 27 times for 169 yards and were 4 of 13 passing for 88 yards and 1 touchdown and 4 interceptions. The Blackjacks rushed 54 times for 205 yards and were 9 of 18 passing for 165 yards and 2 touchdowns with 4 interceptions. TMB had 5 turnovers to 4 for D-B.

Seth Swan rushed for 127 yards on 20 carries and scored two touchdowns. Kyle McIntire caught two passes for 72 yards and 1 TD.

Powerful Arrows win battle of ranked teams

The seventh-ranked Panthers met the sixth-ranked Pipestone Arrows at Tracy Monday with the Arrows getting a convincing 3-0 win. The game scores were 17-25, 15-25 and 23-25. The loss dropped T/M/B’s season record to 8-8.

The first game set the tone for the match with the two teams staying quite even until Arrow junior Steph Kocourek got the serve with the Arrows leading 8-7. Kocourek served for 7 straight Arrow points and the Panthers were never able to recover. Her points came as a result of very aggressive serving as she forced the Panthers into two hitting errors, then served up two aces, got a block for a point and two kills from Larissa Veidhuizen.

“We really came out slow and were never able to recover from that,” said Panther Coach Katie Gervais. “Pipestone did a nice job of setting various hitters to keep our blockers out of sync. Our serve was our strong point but we couldn’t rely on just that to win a game. We just need to start flowing and moving at all times. We just have too many ups and downs.”

Emily Miller led the Panthers in hitting with 8 kills and she had 9 digs and 2 blocks. Rachel Gervais had 5 kills and was 11 of 12 serving with 1 ace. Krysta Tholen had 3 kills, 11 set assists, 11 digs, 2 blocks and was 9 of 9 serving. Michelle Lanoue had 6 digs and Emily Scharfe had 5 while Molly Miller was 12 of 13 serving with 1 ace.

Springfield falls in four

The Panthers beat Springfield 3-1 in a non-conference match Thursday, 25-13, 18-25, 25-18 and 25-11.

“We came out strong and focused,” said Panther Coach Katie Gervais. “We really served and passed well in the second game. We were able to regain a little of our composure and win this match but we have to limit the huge up and downs we have during the match.”

Emily Miller led the Panthers with 10 kills, 13 digs, 2 blocks and she was 17 of 18 serving with 1 ace. Rachel Gervais had 7 kills, 7 digs and 1 block. Michelle Lanoue had 6 kills, 11 digs and was 18 of 19 serving with 3 aces. Emily Scharfe had 4 kills plus 1 block while Molly Miller had 3 kills, 1 block and was 11 of 11 serving with 2 aces. Krysta Tholen had 19 set assists, 8 digs and was 12 of 14 serving while Sarah Fritz had 13 digs.
