Wrestlers start off strong

The Panther wrestling team improved to 5-0 on the year at the Westbrook Triangular last Thursday.

Tracy/Milroy/Balaton beat Pipestone 36-15 and Westbrook-Walnut Grove/Red Rock Central 69-9.

The Panthers won 10 of 14 matches against Pipestone and took advantage of 7 forfeits in the W-WG/RRC meet.

“I was impressed with the intensity of our wrestlers tonight,” said Panther Coach Brian Michelson. “We have eight seniors on this year’s squad and they give us great leadership and their maturity brings better focus.”

Michelson said that he was surprised that the Pipestone match wasn’t closer.

Paul Carlson suffered a concussion in his 215-pound match

“We will have to watch him closely in the next few days,” Michelson said.

The action left the Panthers with three undefeated wrestlers: Zach Campbell at 4-0, and Cole Cooreman Derek Evans at 5-0.

Ellsworth downs Panthers 78-58

The Panther boy’s basketball team lost to Ellsworth Tuesday night at Ellsworth by a score of 78-58. The Panthers are now 1-1 for the season and 0-1 in the Camden Conference.

Ellsworth jumped off to an early 26-6 lead with a hot streak of shooting which included 3 three point baskets, 5 for 5 from the free throw line and 6 of 8 on two point field goals. The Panthers battled back and got within 10 points but could not dig themselves out of the hole. The combination of Aaron VanDerStoep with 28 points and Cody Schilling with 30 points was too much for T/M/B.

“The toughest part about the game was that we started in a hole, down 26-6 is hard to come back from but the boys took it upon themselves to claw their way back,” said Panther Coach Nat Boyer. “We did some good things by limiting our turnovers, shooting well from the free throw line and keeping our intensity on defense. Ellsworth displayed some of the best shooting our coaching staff has observed for some time. Like with any squad throughout the season we are a work in progress, but the kids are working hard and we are headed in the right direction.”

T/M/B was led in scoring by Gary Knott with 15 points and 10 rebounds, Anthony Dolan had 10 points, Spencer Zwaschka with 9 and Derek Radke with 8. T/M/B had 29 rebound to 28 for Ellsworth, had l3 assists to 26, 5 steals to 7, 3 blocks to 5 and turned the ball over 16 times to 13 for Ellsworth. The Panthers shot 51% on field goals, 0% on threes and were 16 of 21 from the line. Ellsworth hit 52% on field goals plus 5 three pointers and was 17 of 22 from the line.
