Bauer to play in Lions' All-Star game

Panther baseball standout Matt Bauer will play in the 32nd annual Lion’s All-Star tournament in Chaska Thursday through Saturday.

Now playing for the Milroy Legion and Milroy Yankee baseball teams, Bauer led area prep hitters this spring with 34 hits in 62 at bats and a .548 average. Bauer had nine doubles, three home runs and had 24 RBIS.

As a pitcher he was 11-12 in his career with a 3.05 ERA and had 175 career strikeouts. He has a baseball scholarship to attend Waldorff College.

Bauer was honored by the Marshall Independent as its high school “player of the year” in baseball. Panther Coach Bill Tauer was honored as “coach-of-the-year” for leading his team to a Camden Conference championship.

Bauer was one of four Tracy/Milroy/Balaton players named to the Independent’s All-Area team. Also honored were Derek Daniels, Derek Radke, and David Schmidt.

Daniels is a repeat selection from last season who hit .322 with 6 doubles. As a pitcher, Daniels won 5 games while losing only 1 and had 32 strikeouts.

Radke was 5-2 pitching with a 2.18 ERA and was fourth in the area in strikeouts with 52.

Schmidt was a solid all-around player who hit .343 with 14 RBI and had 15 stolen bases.


 

JO team prepares for Twin Cities tournament

 

The Tracy, Milroy, Balaton area Junior Olympic “18s” volleyball team will participate in the USA Junior Olympics Invitational Volleyball tournament in Minneapolis, June 29-July 2.

Team members participating in the Twin City tournament are Jackie Haecherl, Lindsey Daniels, Shelbie Jones, Lisa Bauer, Molly Miller, Mallory Fultz, and Brittanie Carlson.

The team has launched a fund-raising campaign to offset expenses at the tournament. Checks can be made payable to TMB JO Volleyball and dropped off at Uniquely Yours in Downtown Tracy or mailed to TMB JO Volleyball, c/o Jim Miller, 300 State Street, Tracy, MN 56175.


Legion team close but no wins over weekend

 

The Milroy Legion team participated in the Marshall Tournament last weekend.

Milroy 6 - Chester Birds 10

In the first game, on Friday, Milroy lost to the Chester Birds (Benild-St Margaret High School Team) 10-6.

“Matt’s (Bauer) grand slam home run in the bottom of the seventh inning got us back in the game, but we fell a little short in the end,” said Milroy Coach Derek Flann.

Derek Radke started on the mound for Milroy and pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up 7 runs (5 earned) on 11 hits while walking 2 and striking out 3. Taylor Rignell pitched the last 1 2/3 innings and gave up 3 runs on 3 hits while walking 1 and striking out 1.

Matt Bauer and David Schmidt led the 8 hit Milroy attack with 2 hits each, including Bauer’s home run.

Milroy 1 - Coon Rapids 5

In the second game, on Saturday, Milroy lost to Coon Rapids 5-1.

All of the runs were scored in the third inning.

Sean Castle led the Milroy offense with 2 of the 5 hits.

David Schmidt started on the mound for Milroy and pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up 5 runs on 3 hits while striking out 2 and walking 3. Luke Walling came on in the third and pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up no runs on 3 hits while striking out 1 and walking 2.

“Walling had an excellent pitching performance in relief,” said Flann. “He came in with the bases loaded and no outs and allowed only 1 run to score. He then held one of the top teams in Minnesota scoreless for the last 3 innings.”

Milroy 2 - Marshall 7

Milroy’s second game on Saturday with Wapheton, S.D, was rained out.

On Sunday Milroy lost to Marshall 7-2.

“We played well on Friday and Saturday despite losses,” said Coach Flann. “We had one bad inning in each game that really hurt us. We were flat on Sunday against Marshall and could never really get going.”

Matt Bauer started on the mound for Milroy and pitched 2 innings giving up 5 runs on 4 hits while walking 4 and striking out 3. Derek Daniels pitched the next 3 innings giving up 2 runs on 1 hit while walking 3 and striking out 4. Castle pitched the last inning and gave up no runs and no hits while registering no walks or strikeouts.
