Sports from the week of August 9, 2006

Competition will begin Aug. 26 for soccer

The new local high school soccer team will be coached by Phil Goetstouwers of Walnut Grove. Goetstouwer has coached the team as a club sport in recent years.

There were 15 candidates for varsity roles at the parents, players and coaches meeting at the high school cafeteria Monday evening.

“Our goal is to field a competitive team with good sportsmanship and a positive attitude,” Goetstouwers told the squad.

The first competition for the team will be participation in a tournament in Mankato on Saturday, August 26.

Football practices will only be once a day

The Tracy/Milroy/Balaton football practices will begin on Monday, August 14. Instead of two-a-day practices as they have had in the past the Panthers will work out once a day from 8:00 a.m. to noon.

This year’s Panther team will be young. Even many of the returning letter winners will be sophomores or juniors. There is some experience in the backfield with David Schmidt, Isaac Dolan, Kyle McIntire and Chris Swenson but the line will lack experience.

“It will be a case of these young players adapting to the changes between B-squad and the varsity,” said Co-Coach Derek Flann. “We will feature a wide open offense that will be fun to watch.”

He added the course was “in great shape in spite of the heat and humidity. The staff there does a great job. Tracy has a gem of a course, which we are privileged to enjoy, as a family, each summer.”
