Junior Kathman, 80
Junior J. Kathman age 80 of St. James, MN, formerly
of Tracy, MN died Wednesday, June 25, 2008 in Franklin,
MN. A visitation was held on Sunday, June 29, 2008
at the Almlie Funeral Home in Tracy.
Junior John Kathman was born November 25, 1927 to
Frank and Ora (Murray) Kathman in Estherville, Iowa,
Emmitt County. He was baptized and confirmed in
the Christian faith and attended Garvin Country
School. On January 14, 1946 he enlisted in the U.
S. Army at Fort Snelling and served until his honorable
discharge on March 12, 1947. He then returned to
the Garvin area.
On July 26, 1947 Junior married Donna Mae Hansen
and they made their home in Tracy. He was a member
of Trinity Lutheran Church while living in Tracy.
Over the years, they moved to Butterfield, MN, St.
James, MN, New Ulm, MN, and Sleepy Eye, MN. Junior
worked as a plant supervisor for Tony Downs and
also as a custodian for the St. James Public Schools.
Junior enjoyed fishing, hunting, raising dogs, spending
lots of time with his family, and watching his son
play softball.
On Wednesday, June 25, 2008 Junior died, surrounded
by his loving family, at the Golden Living Center
in Franklin, MN, at the age of 80.
Junior is survived by his three sons, Jerry (Sandy)
Kathman of Milbank, SD, Keith (Robin) Kathman of
Lewisville, MN, and Scott (Terra) Kathman of New
Ulm, MN; one daughter, Renee (Jeff) Sorbel of Elysian,
MN; one brother, Merle “Bud” Kathman
of Aitkin, MN; three sisters, Vera Schweiso of Aitkin,
MN, Mary Danielson of Balaton, MN, and Betty Fischer
of St. James, MN; fourteen grandchildren and sixteen
great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
His wife, Donna Mae, son, Kenneth, great grandson
Josh Nelson, three brothers Jack, Les, and Donald,
three sisters Mildred Bruns, Frances Hyatt, and
Joanne Coyle, and his parents preceded him in death.
There will be a private family interment at a later
date in the Tracy City Cemetery.

Leonard Petersen, 90
Leonard A. Petersen age 90 of Apple Valley, MN,
formerly of Walnut Grove and Tracy, MN, died Sunday,
June 22, 2008 at the Augustana Healthcare Center
in Apple Valley. Services were held Friday, June
27, 2008 at the Tracy Lutheran Church
Leonard Arthur Petersen was born October 17, 1917
to Andrew P. and Susanna (Gebers) Petersen on a
farm in Adair County west of Des Moines, IA. At
the age of 11, Leonard’s family moved to a
farm on the banks of Plum Creek near Walnut Grove,
MN. In 1933 the family moved to a farm south of
Tracy, MN. He was baptized and confirmed in the
Christian faith and attended country school.
In 1937 Leonard married Ethel L. Rykhus and they
made their home near Tracy. For a short time he
worked as a hired man on the farm of Fred Cooper
and then moved to Park Rapids, MN where he worked
for a Standard Oil Station. They moved to Brookings,
SD for a short time and in 1947 returned to Tracy
where Leonard went to work for the Chicago Northwestern
Railroad in the roundhouse and later on the bridge
crew for over 10 years. In 1962 he moved to Mankato,
MN where he went to work for the State of Minnesota
at Mankato State College as the Stationary Engineer
in the boiler room. Leonard retired in 1981. In
1984 he moved with his wife, Ethel, to Apple Valley,
MN where she died in 1989.
In 1992 Leonard married Marian Widboom and they
made their home in the Senior Apartments in Apple
Valley. He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church
in Apple Valley and the Apple Valley Senior Citizens
for approximately 18 years. He served as president
of the American Federation of State and County Employees
(AFSMCE) for 2 years while in Mankato.
Leonard enjoyed coin collecting, woodworking, fishing,
building small inventions and metal detecting but
he truly loved spending time with his family and
many friends.
On Sunday, June 22, 2008 Leonard died, surrounded
by his loving family, at the Apple Valley Healthcare
Center at the age of 90.
Leonard is survived by his wife, Marian Widboom
of Apple Valley, MN; one daughter, Joyce (Lauren)
Coyle of Hackensack, MN; four grandchildren, Jody
(Ron) Bruen of Circle Pines, MN, Patty (David) Bishop
of Woodbury, MN, Brian and Brandi Meoni of Apple
Valley, MN; six great grandchildren; two great-great
granddaughters; two step-sons, Lyle (Becky) Widboom
of St. Clous, MN and Don (Mary) Widboom of Lakeville,
MN; six step-grandchildren; thirteen step great-grandchildren;
three sisters, Jane (Dick) Wyffels of Redwood Falls,
MN, Betty Rutherford of Calumet, MN and Mae Dull
of San Bernardino, CA; nieces, nephews and many
friends.
His first wife, Ethel, daughter, Connie Meoni, two
grandchildren, parents, four brothers and two sisters
preceded him in death.
Interment was at the Tracy City Cemetery. The Almlie
Funeral Home of Tracy handled the arrangements.

Duane Voss, 79
Duane Voss, Walnut Grove, MN died Thursday, June
26, 2008 at the Douglas County Medical Center in
Alexandria, MN. Services were held Tuesday, July
1, 2008 at the Lake Sarah Lutheran Church in Garvin,
MN.
Duane John Fred Voss was born December 16 1928 to
Christian and Lena (Helmke) Voss on a farm north
of Hadley, MN, Murray County. He was baptized and
confirmed in the Christian faith and attended country
school. He then attended Slayton Public Schools
where he graduated from Slayton High School in 1948.
On February 20, 1950 Duane married JoElyn LaPlante
at St Johns’ Lutheran Church in Hadley. He
worked for Bob Hermann near Avoca, MN as a farm
hand before moving to the Twin Cities, where he
worked for Red and White Foods as a warehouse man.
In 1951 he moved to a farm near Garvin, MN where
he farmed until his retirement in 1994.
On November 5, 1977 Duane married Ceona Nelson.
In 1994 they moved to Walnut Grove, MN. In addition
to farming Duane also worked for the Twine Plant
in Tracy, MN and also installed Patz Equipment for
Fritz Meyers.
He was a member of the Lake Sarah Lutheran Church
in Garvin where he had served in the past on several
church boards. He was a volunteer driver from Tracy
to Walnut Grove, for Senior Dining, for several
years. Over the years Duane enjoyed bowling, fishing,
playing cards, pool and spending time with his family.
Duane and his family were proud of his 35 years
sobriety as a member of AA.
On Thursday June, 26, 2008 Duane died, surrounded
by his loving family, at the Douglas County Medical
Center in Alexandria, MN at the age of 79.
Duane is survived by his wife, Ceona Voss of Walnut
Grove, MN; son, Stephen (Barbra) Voss of Alexandria,
MN; son, Michael (Julie) Voss of Mayer, AZ; daughter,
Cynthia (Allan) Krafve of Glenwood City, WI; son,
Thomas (Mary) Voss of White Bear Lake, MN; son,
Mark (Marsha Emory) Voss of Spencer, IN; son, David
(Tammy) Aubrey of Milaca, MN; daughter, Bridget
(Rob) Marsh of Detroit Lakes, MN; fifteen grandchildren;
two great-granddaughters; one brother, Gerald (Audrey)
Voss of Hadley, MN; one sister, Leona (Buford) Peterson
of Swift Falls, MN; three aunts; nieces and nephews.
His parents, one granddaughter, Lori Lynn, and one
brother, Raymond preceded him in death.
Interment was at the Hoiland Cemetery, rural Garvin.

Henry Carter, 86
Henry “Lenny” Carter, age 86 of Walnut
Grove, passed away on Sunday, June 29, 2008 at the
Sanford Tracy Medical Center in Tracy, MN. Funeral
services will be 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 3,
2008 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Walnut Grove.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the
Walnut Grove Funeral Home. Visitation will continue
one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
Interment will be in the Walnut Grove Cemetery.
