Roger Asplin, 77

Memorial services were held for Roger Albert Asplin at Christ Lutheran Church in Slayton, MN on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Craig Nissen officiating.  The organist was Brenda Whitehead with special music by Rev. Arlen Foss.  Interment was at Steelesville Cemetery rural Dassel, MN.   Totzke Funeral Home of Slayton in charge of arrangements. Roger Asplin was born on November 16, 1933 in Dassel, Minnesota to Albert and Viola Johnson Asplin.  He grew up in Dassel and graduated from Dassel High School in 1951.  Roger then attended the University of Minnesota. 

On September 21, 1956 he and Jean Anderson were married in Minneapolis, MN.  Following their marriage they made their home in St. Paul, MN for one year while Roger finished Veterinary School graduating in 1957.  They then moved to Aberdeen, SD where Roger worked for the Federal Government testing cattle.  In 1958 they moved to Slayton, MN and Roger joined the Slayton Veterinary Clinic where he worked until his retirement.  In retirement he continued to be active in veterinary medicine by helping out at Brockway-Brown Veterinary Clinic in Tracy, MN. 

On May 18, 2011 Roger moved to Our House Hospice Home in Slayton and passed away there on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at the age of 77.  He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Slayton.  Roger served as Sunday school teacher, confirmation teacher, and Bible study leader. He also was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho and the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association. Roger enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping throughout Minnesota, South Dakota, Canada and Africa.  He and Jean also enjoyed dancing.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Asplin of Slayton, MN, four children and their families, Nancy and Greg Rino of Casper, WY (Fawn, Zeb, and Rene), Cindy and Keith Larson of Richfield, MN (Chelsie and Amy), Sally and Rick Remington of San Clemente, CA (Aspyn and Camden), and Brent and Sue Asplin of Eagan, MN (Hope, Hannah and Will), five great-grandchildren, one sister, Virginia and her husband, Edwin Anderson of Dassel, MN. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Russell Asplin and one nephew, Charles Asplin.

 

 

Dorothy Mae Rabe, 90

Dorothy Mae Rabe age 90 of Redwood Falls, formerly of Walnut Grove, passed away Monday, May 30, 2011 at Sunwood Good Samaritan Care Center in Redwood Falls.  Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 2 at the First Presbyterian Church in Redwood Falls.  Visitation will be held 5:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Redwood Valley Funeral Home and will continue one hour prior to the service at church on Thursday.  Interment is in St. Catherine’s Catholic Cemetery in Redwood Falls.  Online condolences may be sent at www.stephensfuneralservice.com.  Stephens Funeral Service - Redwood Valley Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Dorothy Mae (Pool) Rabe was born May 26, 1921 near Chandler, Minnesota to Stephan and Alma (Runge) Pool.  She was baptized in the Methodist church and confirmed in the Lutheran church.  She attended school in the Lake Wilson area.  Dorothy was united in marriage to Emil Rabe in 1939 in Nebraska.  To this marriage, 5 children were born.  Dorothy worked at the Revere Club for a number of years, and later purchased Arlene’s Café in 1958, renaming it Dorothy’s Café, which she owned and operated for 30 years.  Dorothy was well known throughout the area for her homemade rolls, pies, and home cooking.  She was a longtime member of the English Lutheran Church in Walnut Grove and later a member of First Presbyterian Church in Redwood Falls. Dorothy loved cooking, baking, quilting, crocheting, and gardening.  She was always very giving of herself and her time to others.

Dorothy is survived by her children: Adolph (Peggy) Rabe of Motley, MN, Marie Story of Redwood Falls, Doreen (Daniel) Steenblock of Redwood Falls, Jan Erickson of Redwood Falls, and Sue Eidhammer of Windom; 20 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by her siblings: Etta Arnt of Tracy, Herbert (June) Pool of Milroy, Robert (Donna) Pool of Minneapolis, Amy (Jim) Koepke of Erwin, SD, Caroline Grunwald of Owatonna; sister-in-law Betty Pool (wife of John) of Tracy; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. 

She is preceded in death by her parents; 2 grandchildren: David and Tom Story, and siblings: Sylvia, William, George, Stephan, Alvin, John and Mildred.
