George Hahn, 85

George Hahn age 85 of Currie, MN died Saturday, August 4, 2012 at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD.  Services will be 11:00 AM Friday, August 10, 2012 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Walnut Grove, MN.  Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Thursday, August 9, 2012 at the Almlie Funeral Home in Tracy, with a rosary at 6:00 PM and a prayer service at 7:00 PM.  Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Tracy following a luncheon in the church social hall.  The Almlie Funeral Home of Tracy is handling the arrangements. George Leonard Hahn was born October 2, 1926 to Harry and Myra (Farnsworth) Hahn in Slayton, MN, Murray County.  He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith.  George attended country school and then Walnut Grove Public Schools, graduating from Walnut Grove High School in 1944.  He then attended two years of Agricultural School at the University of Minnesota’s St. Paul Campus, returning to the Walnut Grove area and farming with his father.  On October 25, 1950 George was drafted into the U.S. Army and served as a Medic in Germany.  He received his honorable discharge in October of 1952 and he returned to the family farm.

On January 29, 1955 George married Suzanne M. Lauwers in St. Paul, MN and they made their home on a farm south of Walnut Grove, MN for thirteen years before moving to another farm nearby.  George retired from farming in 1986, but they continued to live on the farm to this day.  George was a member of the St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Walnut Grove and the Currie American Legion.  He enjoyed horses, motorcycles and raising cattle.

On Saturday, August 4, 2012 George died at the Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 85.

George is survived by his two sons, Don (Kristin Giles) Hahn of Currie, MN and Tom (Brenda Stynski) Hahn of Marshall, MN; one daughter, Julie (Shawn Hofer) Hahn of Sioux Falls, SD; four grandchildren, Melissa, Donovan (Kristi), Jacqueline and Angela Hahn; two great grandchildren, Hayley and Bailey Hahn; and friends.

His parents, son, Robert and daughter-in-law, Peggy Hahn preceded him in death.

 

Dr. Donald Hicks, 85

Dr. Donald B. Hicks age 85 of Tracy passed away Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls.  Memorial services were held Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012 at Tracy United Methodist Church.  Interment was in Tracy City Cemetery.  Online condolences may be sent at www.stephensfuneralservice.com.  Stephens Funeral Service - Tracy Area Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Donald Burgess Hicks was born October 3, 1926 in Tracy, MN to Thomas and Ethel (Burgess) Hicks.  He was baptized and confirmed at Nettiewyynnt Church.  Don attended grade school in Milroy and received his high school diploma from Pillsbury Academy in Owatonna in 1944.  He attended SDSU for one year, and Iowa State University at Ames for two years.  Don received his veterinary degree in 1951 as a member of the first graduating class from the College of Veterinary Medicine at the U of M. 

He was united in marriage to Janet Strebel in Arlington, Minnesota in 1952.  To this union four children were born.  Janet passed away in 1986.  Following his completion of veterinary school, Don started his practice in Tracy, when he purchased Dr. Remington’s vet practice.  He continued his private practice until 1974. 

On January 14, 1989, Don married Olga Mae Daniels at Tracy United Methodist Church.  Don served as a State Veterinarian for the Minnesota Board of Animal Health until 1994, when he retired.   Don earned the well-deserved title of Veterinarian of the Year in 2005. He was an official Veterinarian at the State Fair for 27 years.  He was a lifetime member of the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association and American Veterinary Medical Association.  For five years, Don was a member of the South Dakota Veterinary Medical Reserve Officers Corps.  In 2003, he spent six weeks in California working on an exotic disease task force.  He was an alternate for serving in Great Britain during a Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak.  Don served the community in various other capacities as well.  He was a member of the Tracy school board, Tracy Fire Department for 20 years, Tracy City Council, Tracy Masonic Lodge, Shriners, and Marshall HAM Radio Club.  He was a volunteer driver for Western Community Action, an EMT with the Tracy ambulance service, and was active in the Tracy United Methodist Church.  He enjoyed fishing, camping, and taking Senior College courses at SMSU. 

Don is survived by his wife Olga Mae; children: Tom Hicks of Grand Marais, MN, Sarah (Jim) Hicks of Minneapolis, MN, Mary (John) Trawick of La Mesa, CA, and Naomi (Mike) Schultz of Brook Park, MN; step children: Steven Daniels of Montevideo, MN and Laurel (Bob) Kindler of Albert Lea, MN; 5 grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren; and 4 step great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by siblings: Jean Heller of St. Paul, Dave (Jeanne) Hicks of Tracy, and Ruth Anne (Richard) Doud of Amelia Island, FL; and many other relatives and friends.  He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Janet, granddaughter Janet Martha Schultz, sister Helen Johnson, and step daughter-in-law Kim DeVetter Daniels. 

 

Lila Nord, 91

Lila “June” Nord age 91 of Balaton, MN died Thursday, August 2, 2012 at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Balaton.  Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 8, 2012 at the Balaton United Methodist Church.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.  Interment will be in the Lakeside Cemetery.  The Almlie Funeral Home in Balaton is handling the arrangements.  Online condolences may be placed at www.almliefh.com

Lila June Nord was born June 17, 1921 to Christ and Mabel (Anderson) Christensen on their farmstead near Balaton, MN.  She was baptized and confirmed in the Balaton Methodist Church and attended Balaton Public Schools, graduating from Balaton High School in 1939.  “June” as she was widely known, was employed as a domestic as a young woman prior to her marriage.

On February 13, 1943, June married Malcolm Nord in Marshall, MN.  They made their home on a farm near Balaton until her husband retired from farming in 1976.  They then moved into Balaton and wintered in Mesa, AZ.  After Malcolm’s death in 1990, June made her permanent home in Mesa.

June enjoyed playing cards, quilting, sewing, and reading.  She also loved to cook and entertain.  She was an active member of the Balaton Methodist Church until she moved to Mesa and transferred her membership to Velda Rose Methodist Church in Mesa in 1990.  She also was active in years past in the Balaton American Legion Auxiliary.

In October of 2008, June moved to Lakeview Senior Housing in Balaton and then in July of 2010, she became a resident of the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Balaton, where she died Thursday, August 2, 2012 at the age of 91.

June is survived by one son, Gary (Faye) Nord of Gold Canyon, AZ; daughter-in-law, Nancy Nord of Apple Valley, MN; one sister, Marian Nord of Balaton, MN; one sister-in-law, Barbara Christensen of White Bear Lake, MN; nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.

Her husband, Malcolm, her parents, one son, Neil, two brothers, Jerry and Kenneth, and many brothers and sisters-in-law preceded her in death.
