Katherine Louise (Carter) Malmberg was born January 14, 1923, in Walnut Grove, Minnesota to Charles and Ada (Hahn) Carter.  She attended country school and then Walnut Grove High School, graduating in 1940. She went on to Gustavus Adolphus College and the University of Minnesota in St. Paul where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics and was a member of Phi Upsilon Omicron National Honor Society in Family and Consumer Sciences.   She taught high school home economics in Nicollet, Lakefield and Fairmont, Minnesota.

On November 22, 1953, Louise was united in marriage to Arthur Malmberg of Walnut Grove.  Together they farmed southwest of Walnut Grove and were wonderful parents for their four children.  Louise and Art were avid gardeners and readers, and long-time leaders in the Holly All-Stars 4-H Club.  In later years she and Art attended over a dozen Elderhostels around the country. They thoroughly enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren, planning interesting projects and activities to do with them, and watching them mature.  Louise was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Walnut Grove, where she spent many active years as a Sunday School teacher, ELCW member and officer, and as a participant in Bible studies, Synod activities, quilting, and in-reach groups.  After their family was grown Louise was a reading tutor and hospice volunteer and participated in the Holly women’s Extension group.  Louise touched many lives with her genuine smile, her gifts of kindness, acceptance and hospitality, and her positive and generous spirit.

Louise is survived by her four children:  Jim (Karen) of Walnut Grove, Kathy (Terry Foecke) of Minneapolis, Dale (Merna) of Walnut Grove, and Kristin (Tom Pitchford) of Bloomington; 10 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters- and brother-in-law Janice Carter of Tracy, Jeane Carter of Tracy, Arvid and Willadene Malmberg of Wayne, NE, and Doris Vadla of Cleveland, OH; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband Art, parents Charles and Ada Carter, infant sister Marjory, and brothers Paul, Leonard, Charles, and Jim.
