Arthur Maas, 96

Arthur Maas age 96 of Walnut Grove passed away Thursday, June 9, 2016 at Prairie View Senior Living.  Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 13 at English Lutheran Church in Walnut Grove.  Burial was in the Johnsonville Cemetery.  Online condolences may be sent at www.stephensfuneralservice.com.  Stephens Funeral Service - Walnut Grove Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. 

Arthur Maas was born July 9, 1919 in Johnsonville Township, Redwood County, Minnesota to Frank and Martha (Wandersee) Maas.  He was baptized and confirmed at Johnsonville Trinity Lutheran Church.  Art attended rural school District 59 through the 8th grade.  He also attended U of M Agriculture College for two semesters.  On December 21, 1941 Art married Alice Andersen in the Johnsonville Trinity Lutheran Church.  Together they farmed and had registered Guernsey dairy cattle.  They moved into Walnut Grove in 1982 and to Country View in 2006.  Art worked for District 59 elementary school and Johnsonville Telephone Company.  He served as Treasurer for the Johnsonville Township Board for many years, District 59 elementary school, Johnsonville Telephone Company, and the Walnut Grove Creamery.  He was a member of the Walnut Grove Lions, served on the AMPI Board, and served in many positions at Johnsonville Trinity Lutheran Church.

Art is survived by his wife Alice; 4 children: Ronald (Judy) Maas of Whittier, CA, Judy (Tom) Micke of Delano, Diane (Douglas) Halstenson of Sioux Falls, SD, and Bruce (Maydra) Maas of Walnut Grove; 7 grandchildren; 1 step grandchild; 7 great grandchildren; 7 step-great grandchildren; brother Ed (Marian) Maas of Woodbury; sister Mildred Arends of Westminster, CO; and sister-in-law Cora Steffen of Alpine, CA. 

 

Irene Retzloff, 92

Funeral service for Irene Retzloff, 92, of Tracy, will be 1:00 p.m. on (today) Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at the Tracy Lutheran Church in Tracy, MN.      Interment will follow the service at the Tracy Cemetery.

Irene Ruth (Selck) Retzloff was born on September 5, 1923, in Tracy, to Frank and Marie (Bachmann) Selck.  She grew up in Tracy and graduated from Tracy High School.  Irene then worked for the Tracy Bottling Company for a time. 

She met Harry Retzloff at a dance in Walnut Grove.  On March 20, 1948, the couple was married in San Antonio, TX.  They made their home in California for a time before returning to Tracy in 1951.  They farmed north of town until Harry retired in 1980.  In 1989, they moved to town.  The couple enjoyed fishing and camping.  For the last few years, Irene has lived in the Prairie View Senior Living.

Irene died on Sunday, June 12, 2016, at the Prairie View Senior Living in Tracy. 

She is survived by her sister, Frances Gregoire, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. 

 

Adeline Scharfe, 89

Adeline Marie Scharfe age 89 of Balaton passed away Monday, June 13, 2016 at the Colonial Manor in Balaton.  Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 17 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Balaton.  Visitation is 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday at the church with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.  Burial is in Johnsonville Cemetery.  Online condolences may be sent at www.stephensfuneralservice.com.  Stephens Funeral Service - Tracy Area Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Adeline Marie was born November 4, 1926 on the family farm in Johnsonville Township, Redwood County, Minnesota, south of Lucan, to Fred and Esther (Stark) Radtke.  She was baptized and confirmed at Johnsonville Lutheran Church.  Adeline graduated from Walnut Grove High School.  On October 21, 1945, a beautiful autumn day, she married Ervin Scharfe at Johnsonville Lutheran Church.  The couple lived in the Johnsonville area until 1960 when they moved to Ellsborough Township where Adeline worked at The Current Lake Store and raised her eight children.  In 1969 the family moved to Balaton.  She began working at the new Colonial Manor in the early 70’s as one of their first employees.  Adeline later became an employee of Mattson’s Market where she became a very familiar face to the community.  After retirement she still worked part-time at Colonial Manor in activities, mostly playing piano and doing crafts.  Adeline was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she was active in the Ladies Aid, church council, and choir.  She enjoyed reading, and doing needlepoint and cross word puzzles.  Adeline loved watching the Twins and Vikings, and Jeopardy, and playing piano and singing. 

Adeline is survived by her children: Amy Seaton of Balaton, Mary (Ray) Gorman of Pipestone, Neal (Robin) Scharfe of Balaton, Jane (Ralph) Johnson of Clear Lake, Becky (Russ) Schmidt of Hartford, SD, John (Wanda) Scharfe of Ruthton, and Jennifer (Scott) Roepke of Hutchinson; 16 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; son-in-law Jim Swan of Slayton; special family friend Sally Reese of Tracy; and many other relatives and friends. 

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Ervin, three sisters: Verda, Velma, and Arlene, two infant sons Thomas and James, daughter Susan Swan, and three infant grandchildren.
