Obituaries from the week of Nov. 30, 2016

Sylvia Popp, 98

Sylvia Popp, age 98 of Tracy, passed away Monday, November 21, 2016 at Prairie View Senior Living in Tracy.  Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 29 at the Tracy Area Funeral Home.  Burial was in the Tracy Cemetery.  Online condolences may be sent at www.stephensfuneralservice.com.  Stephens Funeral Service - Tracy Area Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Sylvia Viola (Radke) Popp was born September 14, 1918 in Tracy, Minnesota to Gust and Emily (Schoyer) Radke.  She and her mother moved to Chicago, Illinois when Sylvia was a young child.  Her mother died when Sylvia was only seven years old.  At that time, Sylvia was adopted by her aunt Sophie and they lived in Arlington Heights, Illinois until she married Henry Popp.  Henry wanted to become a farmer so they moved to a farm site near Tracy in 1948.  They worked very hard to be successful on a farm with no electricity or running water.

Sylvia was known as being very strong willed.  Even though Sylvia did not live in the country as a child she adapted to country life in Minnesota.  She was a successful chicken farmer and she was known for her high quality eggs.  She enjoyed her time with animals such as dogs, cats, ducks, and pigs.  She was a successful cook and avid gardener.

Sylvia and Henry had two daughters, JoAnn and Nancy.  Sylvia lived on the family farm site until 1988.  Sylvia had a great sense of humor and she enjoyed laughing and joking with family and friends.  She was an excellent self-taught piano player and loved to listen to many types of music.  She enjoyed fishing for bullheads and perch.  She spent many hours fishing with her grandchildren at the lakes around Tracy.  She always looked forward to the figure skating season each year as she spent many enjoyable hours watching the skaters perform.  Sylvia was a creative and artistic person.  She was known for painting beautiful winter scenes on the windows of the house at the farm.  She created beautiful Christmas ornaments and embroidered many beautiful pillow cases and table runners even though she had failing eyesight.

Twenty years ago she was diagnosed with cancer and was given six months to live.  Showing what a strong fighter she was, she beat the cancer and lived for the next twenty years cancer free.  Sylvia was a curious person and she enjoyed learning new things.

Sylvia is survived by her daughters JoAnn Greenfield of Tracy and Nancy Thedans (Wayne Petit) of Echo; grandchildren: Tammy (Russ) Gilley of Wood Lake, Myk (Shirley) Greenfield of Marshall, Jason Greenfield (Jennifer Luetell) of Lake Crystal, and Denis (Theresa) Greenfield of Webster City, IA; great grandchildren: Jasmine (Brooke) Hurt of Cottonwood, Jaden Thedans of Echo, David Gilley of Wood Lake, Evan Greenfield of Marshall, and Christopher (Addyson) Greenfield of Webster City, IA; and great-great grandson Hunter Hurt of Cottonwood.  She was loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed.

Blessed be her memory.

Edward Smith, 81

Edward “Eddie” Smith, age 81, of Marshall, Minnesota, passed away on Friday, November 25, 2016, at the Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center. Funeral Services were held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 29, 2016, at Christ United Presbyterian Church in Marshall.  Interment will follow in the Marshall Cemetery.

Eddie died peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, November 25, 2016, at Avera Marshall. His family toasted him at his passing with a round of Schwan’s chocolate fudge sundae cups.

Edward “Eddie” Earl Smith was born on October 20, 1935, at the Canby hospital to parents Keith and Gladys (Hults) Smith. He grew up on a farm near Milroy, was baptized at Ashford Presbyterian in Milroy, and was a graduate of Milroy High School.

Eddie was working as a gas station attendant when he was approached by Paul Schwan to come work at the Schwan Dairy. He began his 43-year career with The Schwan Food Company in 1956, washing milk bottles for $.65 an hour. He became Paul’s right hand man in ice cream production, earning the position of Ice Cream Plant Manager. Eddie devoted himself to Schwan’s success and growth for more than 40 years, proudly helping to rebuild after the 1974 fire, designing the new ice cream plant, and leading Schwan’s Canada. He won the Schwan Heritage of Quality Award in 1995. He retired in 1999 – escaping work with those darn computers, but his pride in the company, the Schwan family, and his employees never diminished.

Eddie was blessed to have three amazing wives in his life. He was joined in marriage to Betty Danielowski on December 11, 1955. They made their home in Marshall and were blessed with five children: Debby, Ron, Ken, Laurae, and Sherry. On August 6, 1985, Eddie was joined in marriage with Marilyn Hentges Volk. Eddie and Marilyn enjoyed 20 years together, splitting their time between Marshall, Lake Cochrane, SD, and McAllen, TX until Marilyn’s untimely passing. On June 22, 2007, Eddie was joined in marriage with long-time friend Jeannie Landuyt Maeyaert Krog, turning friends into family. Eddie and Jeannie split their time between Marshall and McAllen, TX.

Eddie had many joys and passions. He served in the Marshall Fire Department and Airport Commission.  He loved life, and thrived while spending time with friends and family - he told many stories of camping with the Rawhide Rovers.  Eddie’s kindness and humor were appreciated by all who knew him. He was loved and respected by many. His favorite places to be were in his motorhome on his way to his Texas home, on the golf course, or enjoying morning coffee with friends. He loved pontoon rides, yard work, naps after big meals, and in his retired years, working in the fields. He was fiercely proud of his family – both those by blood and those by choice. He proudly recognized each grandchild, and great-grandchild’s birthday, no easy task with such a large family!

Eddie is survived by his children, Debby (Tom) Bringmann of Gilman, IA, Ron (Marcy) Smith of Annandale, Ken Smith of St Cloud, Laurae (Mike) Hively of Lynd, Sherry Smith of Gary, SD; grandchildren, Barbra Springer, Becca VanDam, Beth Bangtson, Bonita Hummel, Dustin Smith, Corey Smith, Nikky Smith, Adam Smith, Erica Smith, Alex Smith, Jennifer Lundberg, Levi Steenhoven, Lane McLain; 15 great-grandchildren; step-children, Paula Volk, Jim Volk, Chuck Volk, Deb Rofuth, Dean (Connie) Maeyaert, Diane Buesing, Dori (Denny) Vandendreiessche; 7 step-grandchildren; 5 step-great-grandchildren; siblings-in-law, Ardyce Carrow, Jerry (Kandy) Landuyt, Gloria (Roger) VanOverbeke, Glad Henning, Gordy Landuyt, George (Kris) Landuyt, Gail (Tom) Boyum, Gwen (Dale II) Johnson; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

Mrs. Bernice Trout, 88, of Lamberton passed away peacefully on November 29, 2016. She was born December 8, 1927 at the Booth House in St Paul to Theoline Hilde. She entered foster care and lived with the William Olson Family in Hawley, Mn. In 1937 she was adopted by Betsey Aasen of Shetek Township. She went on to graduate from Tracy High School and Mankato Commercial College. She worked in Minneapolis for The Cornelius Company.

Bernice married Dr. Lyle E. Trout on June 15, 1951 in Tracy. They moved to Lamberton to start his Veterinary Practice that very summer. Lyle was the love of her life and they enjoyed 64 years together. Bernice loved the large family that Lyle came from. It was her idea to take that Sunday drive after church where they always ended up at the Trout family farm. Bernice was employed as the bookkeeper for her husband’s veterinary business but she had many other passions.

She was an amazing cook, baker, canner, cleaner, organizer and embraced the role of “homemaker”. She was most importantly the mother of three daughters, who benefited from her mentoring and who knew that if you called her for anything, she would come. She planned fabulous family events, weekends at the lake and family vacations. She freely invested her time in her grandchildren taking pride in all they did. She also loved to shop. Her granddaughters can attest to the fun they had with her on those shopping and dining trips.

Bernice was active in her community working with the blood mobile in Lamberton, member of Our Saviors Women’s Group at Our Saviors’ Lutheran Church, and a member of American Legion Auxiliary. She also loved to play bridge with friends. She loved to explore the world through travel to the USSR, Ireland, Brazil, Australia and anywhere else she could find a tour and take Lyle along. She was an appreciative guest in these countries and definitely brought home lots of information.

When her husband retired they spent many years wintering in Arizona where they could rest, play cards, and have fun with their lifelong friends.

Bernice is survived by her children, Wynnell (Davis James) Kirkpatrick of Cokato, Juanita (William) Sorg of Hastings, and Cynthia (Curtis) Mattison of Hastings. Grandchildren Callista Troup, Kambria Robertson, Ketrah Schreifels, Nathan Kirkpatrick, Kezia Smith, Karl Sorg, Janna Bauer, Gabriella Sorg, Stuart Mattison, and twelve great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Lyle, his parents and her adopted mother.
