Remember When

Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers

July 28, 1955 — The National Guard was ready and brought prompt results here late Thursday night as they were called from their regular meeting to join the search for a 6-year-old youngster. Steven Gempler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Gempler, had been missing from his home for nearly four hours when Guardsman Richard Kiemer, acting on a hunch, discovered the boy at his great-grandmother’s, Mrs. Thomas Silver. Mrs. Gempler became worried when Steven didn’t return from playing in the city park and started a search for him. While Mrs. Gempler was gone, Steven returned home and discovered that no one was there. He then went to his grandmother’s and again found nobody home.

July 25, 1985 — Mandatory garbage service for Tracy residences has been vetoed by the Tracy City Council. The mandatory garbage pickup was one of two proposed amendments to Tracy’s garbage ordinance that were eliminated by council members in the first reading of the new ordinance Monday night. The other possible change deleted from the ordinance was the establishment of a uniform residential garbage rate of $5.65. At the present time, residential rates vary somewhat from customer to customer. The mandatory garbage pickup was inserted into the garbage amendments at the council’s July 8th meeting at the request of councilman Chris Kamrud.

The computer lab will be located in the basement of the library, which is currently in the process of being renovated. It is anticipated that about 12 computer stations will be given for the lab. “This is not in the order we would have this happen, but it’s a good opportunity with this person willing to donate,” commented Librarian Val Quist. The donor is Norwood “Woody” Sisson, who resides in Arizona part of the year and the remainder in Park Rapids.
