Melvin Welu

Mass of Christian Burial for Melvin Welu, 61, of Milroy, was Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Milroy. Interment was at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Milroy. Upon conclusion of the graveside service a luncheon was be provided at the Milroy Public School.

Melvin Paul Welu was born on August 1, 1963, in Marshall, to Lloyd and Helen (Coudron) Welu. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Milroy High School. On November 6, 1993, he was united in marriage to Beverly Hoffmann at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. Melvin was part of the third generation on the Welu family farm.

He and his family farmed and operated Welu Construction. Melvin was very talented and always busy. He was generous with his time and expected little in return. He was proud of his hometown and was a local amateur historian. Melvin believed in supporting local businesses and activities and was instrumental in resurrecting the Milroy Fun Fest which will take place in September. He also enjoyed following the local town ball teams.

He was passionate about his family. He enjoyed giving the grandchildren tractor rides and looked forward to spending time with them. He also enjoyed his weekly Saturday night dates with beloved wife, Beverly. After one date was concluded, he would begin plans for the next week where the couple would frequent local area restaurants.

Melvin was an active member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church his entire life. His dedication to his parish was evident in the many roles he took over the years. He served as an usher, money counter, and gave his time as a CCD principal. Each spring, Melvin took pride in organizing the annual parish men’s dinner.

Melvin loved the great outdoors. He enjoyed surveying his fields on his four wheeler and snowmobile trips out west. He also enjoyed collector cars and tractors and participated in many roll-ins and car shows.

Melvin was an early riser and enjoyed the mornings. He liked visiting with people and sharing stories. Melvin was always on time and even set his family clocks ahead by ten minutes. He was somewhat anti-technology and proudly carried his flip-phone. He looked forward to his daily 9:30 a.m. pop and cookie “lunch” at his construction site.

His memory will be cherished and never forgotten by family and friends and the Milroy community.

Melvin died tragically on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, as the result of a farm accident in rural Milroy.
