Aug. 16, 1995 — There is more to riding bucking broncos than just “hanging on.” Justin Miller says a hundred rules run through his mind when he drops onto the horse in the chute. “The object is to try to lift the horse off the ground. You have to pull up on the reins with one hand and make sure the other hand is up in the air. Your feet have to be above the horses shoulders or you will be disqualified. There are many rules that have to be followed to stay in the competition,” said Miller. Miller, 15, has been riding bucking broncos in competition for the past three seasons. He averages 15 to 20 rides a summer.

Aug. 17, 2005 — The Milroy Yankees won twice over Lamberton on their way to state. In the second game, Andy Schmidt went 3-for-4 and Eric Dolan was 3-for-5 to lead Milroy to a 3-1 win.

Aug. 19, 2015 — A former Balaton youth, Hunter Mickelson, played on the U.S. men’s basketball team that won a gold medal at the World University Games in South Korea earlier this summer. The 6-10 Mickelson, who is entering his senior year with the Kansas Jayhawks, was the U.S. team’s most productive center in the tournament. Playing just over 17 minutes a game, Mickelson averaged 8.4 points, five rebounds, and 1.1 blocked shots per game. The U.S. team defeated Germany in doubleovertime in the championship tilt.
