Sports Flashbacks

Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers

Aug. 25, 1955 — Tracy defeated Balaton 7-4 in an exhibition game here Sunday as the Engineers counted seven runs in the first four innings, then held on for the victory. Roger Mickelson pitched the victory for the Engineers as he went all the way on the hill. Gale Brekken, subbing for Lee Brandt, who is playing with playoff winner Redwood Falls, was behind the plate and did a good job for the Tracy club. Mickelson and Brekken, along with Shaw, led the 11-hit Tracy attack with two hits each.

Aug. 26, 1965 — For the sixth consecutive year, Margaret Johnson repeated as women’s champion of the Tracy Country Club, shooting an 89 to best Celie Hanapel and Betty Bjornebo who came in with scores of 98 and 101, respectively.

Aug. 21, 1975 — A three-run double by Dave Sebastian and a single by Charlie Hayes propelled the Engineers into the state amateur baseball tournament as Tracy beat Milroy 7-5 in the Southwest Minny title game. Bryce Pack chalked up his third win in eight days.

Aug. 23, 1995 — Jeff Lau fired a 188 total for 45 holes over the two day Tracy Country Club’s Tournament to win the championship this weekend. “I stayed out of trouble,” said Lau. “And I putted well.” Lau holed an approach shot to number one from near the eighth tee to start the second round on Sunday for an eagle. “That shot got me off to a good start on the second round,” observed Lau. “It changed what could have been a 5 to an eagle two.” Fifty two golfers competed.

Aug. 24, 2005 — Matt Bauer has been named to the Minnesota State High School Baseball Coaches Association Class AA All-State Team. Bauer is one of only three juniors on the 22-man allstate squad. “Matt has only been with us for two years and he has performed remarkably well at the plate,” said Panther Coach Bill Tauer. Bauer led his team to the 212 Conference in batting and set a new school record for batting average in the process. He had 38 hits in 68 at bats for a .559 average that included three home runs.

Aug. 26, 2015 — Four of five starters on the Panther offensive line were new. The defensive line was revamped, and rookies were starting in the secondary. But the new faces did their jobs, and the result was a 43-12 win over Sleepy Eye Public in the season-opening game for both teams. Brett Swenhaugen dashed to 60- and 42-yard touchdown runs in the second half. The 185-pound senior also threw for two TDs while completing 12-17 passes for 219 yards.
