Remember When

Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers Aug. 25, 1955 — A new clothing store for Tracy will open in about four weeks in the former Red Owl building on Third Street, it was announced today by Howard Enderson of Worthington. Enderson was in the city to make arrangements, including installing new flooring and lights, and new fixtures. The new store will feature men’s and boys’ clothing and will be known as “Enderson Clothing.”

Aug. 26, 1965 — Two local college youth had a not-sothrilling experience overnight, drifting across fog-shrouded Lake Shetek. Tom Lee of Tracy and Mike Peterson of Garvin took sleeping bags and climbed aboard a small raft at Frisvold’s beach after midnight Saturday. The raft moved far enough from the beach to where they couldn’t see the shore. The boys waited until 10 the next morning when the fog lifted and they spotted the shoreline by Rignell’s cottage on Owanka Bay - almost 3 miles from their starting point.

Aug. 21, 1975 — Randy Lessman won champion honors at the Lyon County Fair for his shop project of a porch swing. Purple ribbon winners were Julie Lanoue, Laurel Daniels, Marlene Lanoue and Kenny Lanoue. Peg and Marr Hedge both were reserve champions.

Aug. 22, 1985 — Funeral services for Les Johnson, wellknown Tracy businessman, were conducted Monday. Johnson, 55, president and executive officer of Homera Inc., died Friday at Tracy Municipal Hospital. Johnson was active in Tracy business circles for over 30 years. A 1948 graduate of Tracy High School, Johnson attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis before returning to Tracy. After starting out as a mechanic at Salmon Chevrolet and Oldsmobile, Johnson opened his own television and fix-it shop. In 1957, he added a furniture and appliance store.

Aug. 23, 1995 — A 28-unit “mini” storage building will be erected this fall on South Street near Downtown Tracy.

Owners of the 30x100 foot building will be Art and Karen Peterson, Tracy. The business will be known as A&K Storage. The new business will be located on a 100x285-foot lot the Petersons purchased recently from the CENEX Land O’Lakes LP gas company. The property is located across from the former Tracy Bottling plant, between South Street and the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern railroad right-of-way. It is expected that construction will begin the second week in September, with units ready for rental by Oct 1.

Obituaries: Maurice Davis Aug. 24, 2005 — A Tracy Area High School senior has been selected to accompany Governor Tim Pawlenty on a trade mission to China this November. David Schiller, the son of Ken and Colleen Schiller, is one of seven student ambassadors who will travel with Gov. Pawlenty and approximately 200 business, government, academic, and civic leaders. While the goal of Pawlenty’s trip is to promote the new Minnesota- China Partnership initiative, Schiller and the other students will have a different focus. They will be responsible for providing reports for a website about China that will be accessible to students and teachers statewide.

Aug. 26, 2015 — Angela Fischer is the new face to greet visitors at Tracy Area High School. “I have big shoes to fill,” Fisher comments about taking over for Sue Nackerud, who retired this summer after a 30-year tenure as the high school secretary. A 1996 graduate of Pipestone High School, Fischer attended South Dakota State University and majored in apparel merchandising. After college, she managed a Maurice’s clothing store in Brookings, SD, before moving to Denver.

WARREN HEMMINGSEN, 13 on Friday the 13th, is shown buying a Box Car Day button from queen candidate Roberta Forbregd in 1965. All seven queen candidates will be selling buttons the next two Friday evenings downtown and also at a booth at the Lyon County Fair. The $1 button is the admission to the Box Car Day Monday night entertainment program, coronation ceremonies and dance that follows.
