Sports Flashbacks

Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers Sept. 1, 1955 — The Milroy Yankees, last year’s state Class B champs, stunned pennantwinning Marshall 14-12 to sweep the final playoff series and win the First Night League title (they scored a 4-3 win days earlier). Pitcher Reed Lovness helped his own case wth a two-run homer as part of a seven-run fifth inning. Spike Dolan and Bud Nelson both suffered severe head injuries in the ninth when they collided chasing a fly ball.

Sept. 2, 1965 — Hugh Gibson repeated as men’s champion of the Tracy Country Club in the annual tournament played Sunday — the second consecutive time he has won the title, and the sixth time in his career as a club member. Adverse weather conditions of wind, cold and rain was credited for cutting the number of participants to 34 in the championship and four other flights. Gibson came in with a score of 118 for 27 holes. Jim Ford and Ralph Brown were tied with 120, and in the “playoff” of drawing straws. Ford took runner-up honors for the fourth time.

Aug. 28, 1975 — Dean Champine, Marshall lefthander, hurled a no-hit game against the Tracy Engineers under the lights at Marshall Wednesday night but errors nearly cost him the game. Champine, 13-0, fanned 16 batters for the 2-1 decision, but the ninth inning could have been trouble. Tracy put Gale Otto and Rom Rignell on base with errors to start the ninth. Otto scored the only run on a double play. Chapine fanned the final Tracy batter to reserve the win.

Aug. 29, 1985 — Steve Borchert of Balaton captured first place at the men’s club tournament at the Tracy Country Club. Wimp Peterson, the tournament manager, presented Borchert with the trophy. Borcherts’ dad, Ron, won the tournament in 1979. Flight winners were Bruce Lerohl, Jack Lau, Brian Onken, Chuck Pinckney, Mark Peterson, Jim Miller and Myron Skoblik.

Aug. 30, 1995 — Sandi Rettmer won her third women’s club championship in the last four years with a 91, two stroked better than Doreen VandeWiele. Barb Brey finished third with a 94.

Aug. 31, 2005 — The defending Class A A volleyball champion Panthers opened the 2005 season with a narrow win over the MCC Rebels at Slayton Monday night. Game scores were 25-21, 18-25, 2225, 26-24 and 17-15. Emily Miller led the offense with 12 kills and Rachel Gervais had 6. Miller had 7 blocks (3 solo) and Gervais had 5. The Rebels’ Christensen had 16 kills and Gengler 9. Miller was 12 of 14 serving with 3 aces and Gervais had 5 aces. Miller also led the defense with 11 digs while Sarah Fritz had 6. Krysta Tholen had 25 set assists.

Sept. 2, 2015 — Big offensive plays keyed a 41-13 victory over rival Murray County Central in the Panthers’ home opener Friday. Josh Kirk had a banner night, catching eight passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns. The senior also ran 71 yards for a TD. Riley Kirk rolled up 131 rushing yards and scored twice.
