Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers
Sept. 15, 1955 — Duane Brekken is back with the St. Olaf football team. The 6-foot, 175-pound fullback led the Midwest Conference in scoring as a sophomore last year and is expected to be a mainstay in the Ole backfield this year. His coach called him one of the fastest backs in the league.
Sept. 16, 1965 — Two Tracy linemen — Garry Hippe and Dave Van Meveren — turned in great performances which helped keep Marshall cling to a six-point half-time margin that came about because of a fumble in a 12-7 Scrappers’ loss to Marshall. Doug Johnson was called upon to take over a backfield slot on defense and really made some hard tackles. Sophomore Ric Stotka and veteran fullback Bob Shoeman ran hard and well. Shoeman suffered a bruised muscle in his ankle which sidelined him during part of the contest.
Sept. 11, 1975 — Ric McClellan, 20, for the fourth consecutive year, won the men’s championship golf tournament at the Tracy Country Club Sunday afternoon. He was one of 42 participating in this annual event. Ric shot a 36-39 Saturday and 35-36 Sunday for a total of 146.
Sept. 12, 1985 — The Minnesota Vikings aren’t the only team that starts a game off with a fumble and ends with a victory. The Scrappers did the same thing Friday night. After fumbling away the first possession of the game, the Scrappers thrashed Madison 22-3. Individually, Stacy Sletten compiled 79 yards on 10 carries, while Doug Neisess ran nine times for 60 yards. Doug Hatch had all 148 yards in the air.
Sept. 13, 1995 — After losing a 7-6 heartbreaker in their season opener, the Panthers turned the tables and reveled in the ecstasy of a 21-20 win over Maple River at Amboy. Jared Peterreins, the Panthers scrappy flanker and cornerback, had an outstanding game. The junior caught two touchdown passes of 8 and 53 yards, and hauled in another 41-yarder to set up the third touchdown. Peterreins also passed for a two-point conversion and intercepted two passes.
Sept. 14, 2005 — The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Panther football team improved to 1-1 (1-1 Little Sioux Conference) with a narrow 21-19 win over MACCRAY at Maynard Friday night. “It was a fun game until the last quarter,” said Panther running back Seth Swan. “We have to learn to finish the game.” Swan led the offense with 34 carries for 129 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Sept. 16, 2015 — Kaylee Kirk was 17-17 with three aces in a 3-0 win over the RTR Knights. Sydney Lanoue pounded down 13 kills. Sidney Karbo had two of TMB’s blocks, and Gabbie Gervais dished out 30 set assists.
