Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers Sept. 15, 1955 — Mary Ann Moon, Amiret, will leave for a six-month tour of Chilé on Oct. 17, where she will study agriculture conditions under the auspices of the International Farm Youth Exchange.

Sept. 16, 1966 — David Kosse and Dick Hyllested will leave Monday by plane from Minneapolis on a 21-day freelance motor tour of Europe. The young men also plan to visit East Berlin if possible, attend the Octoberfest in Munich and also visit Dave’s brother, Gary, who is with the Air Force at Lyon, France.

Sept. 11, 1975 — Area residents are asked to check their Box Car Day buttons for numbers that may be worth $50 and $100 in merchandise value. The lucky numbers, drawn after the coronation program, are 666, 1172, and 1467. Bill Drackley, manager of the Tracy Area Chamber of Commerce, said three of the numbers are worth $50, and number 1467 is worth $100.

Sept. 12, 1985 — Tracy School District 417 voters defeated the proposed twomillion dollar levy referendum by 180 votes Tuesday. The unofficial results presented at Tuesday’s school board meeting were recounted for official results. Results by precinct were: Amiret—17 yes, 95 no; Currie—43 yes, 81 no; Garvin—37 yes, 112 no; and Tracy—417 yes, 406 no. The totals, with 1208 voters going to the polls, made 514 yes, 694 no. Last year, a fourmillion dollar referendum was defeated by a 616 to 241 margin.

Sept. 13, 1995 — Minority student enrollments are up substantially for Tracy Public Schools this fall. Tracy Supt. Harold Remme reported to school board members Monday night that District 417 has 98 students actively enrolled in its “English as a Second Language” program. Virtually all these students are from Hispanic or Hmong families who have moved into the area within the past four years. About three-fifths of the students are Hispanic and two-fifths are Hmong. The increased minority enrollment means that about 11% of the District 417’s school population is made up of minority students. Last year the percentage of Tracy minority students was between 5-7 %.

Sept. 14, 2005 — “We feel fortunate. We really do,” Tracy Food Pride owner Dawn Schelhaas was saying on Tuesday. “This could have been a lot worse...a lot worse.” Business operations at the Tracy supermarket were normal on Tuesday. But on Monday, Food Pride endured a 10-hour power outage. The outage shut down all of the store’s refrigeration and freezing equipment, forcing the emergency transfer of tens of thousands of dollars worth of perishable food. With flashlights illuminating the store and a generator powering two cash registers and price scanners, Food Pride stayed open until power was restored at about 5:30 p.m. Monday. Dairy products, produce, meat, and frozen foods were transferred back to coolers and freezers Tuesday.

Sept. 16, 2015 — Opening day enrollments in District 2904 declined slightly from a year ago. Tracy Public Schools welcomed a total of 749 students, kindergarten through grade 12, when classes began on Sept. 1. That compares with 761 students on the first day of school in 2014. St. Mary’s School saw an increase of four K-6 students, from 36 to 40. Tracy Area High School has 371 students, with Tracy Elementary having 378 pupils. The largest grades in the system are the ninth (71), eighth (69), fifth (66) and sixth (65).
