Sports Flashbacks

Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers Oct. 6, 1955 — Roger Kerr returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and David “Red” Sammons also scored as the Scrappers crushed Sleepy Eye, 40-14.

Oct. 7, 1965 — Ruby Wisherd, with a high game of 218, topped all women bowlers by 48 or more pins at the Tracy Bowl last week.

Oct. 2, 1975 — Behind devastating serves by Lynn Butson and Deb Ziemke, the Tracy High School volleyball team defeated Canby, 2-0. In the final game, Ziemke served for nine points and Butson for eight.

Oct. 3, 1985 — Tuesday night, the Milroy Spartans took their 3-0 Camden Conference record on the road to Hendricks. After a bit of shuffling, the Spartans came away with their fourth conference win of the season. Kathy Dolan led the hitting attack with 11 kills, followed by Sandy Dolan’s nine.

Oct. 4, 1995 — Chris Brink led the Panther hitting with 15 kills, while Kris DeRuyck had nine in a 3-0 win over the Southwest Christian Eagles in Edgerton.

Oct. 5, 2005 — Balaton native Leah (Gifford) Ohme passed more than her share of runners during an illustrious cross country and track career. But she’ d never passed a Minnesota governor until Sunday. It happened near the finish line of the Twin Cities Marathon Sunday. Ohme, a 1997 Balaton graduate, passed Governor Tim Pawlenty as she approached the marathon’s finish line near the state capitol. The former Panther standout could be seen in television news clips of the governor finishing the marathon.

Oct. 7, 2015 — A 45-14 homecoming victory by the Panthers was fueled by two touchdowns apiece by Riley Kirk and Josh Swenhaugen. The Panthers finished with 466 yards to help overcome three turnovers.

SVRLB’s Brent Galema (32) slows down the Loggers Tom Doubler in a 1985 game in Walnut Grove. Doubler finished the game with 174 yards rushing. He was injured late in the game and taken from the field by ambulance; he suffered back spasms and will return to action.
