Remember When

Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers

Oct. 6, 1955 — Tracy will have a new business, a selfserve and commercial laundry, it was announced today by Mr. and Mrs. Bob Samuelson, formerly of Milwaukee, and now here making preparations to open for business. The laundry will be located in the Quillin building adjacent to the Jenkins Super Market on 4th street. Water is being run into the quarters and renovation of the building will be made to accommodate all new equipment, Mrs. Samuelson said yesterday. Equipment will include two large commercial units, and several small washers for quick small-bundle washings.

Oct. 3, 1985 — When Gary Tholen packed up his bow Sunday afternoon for a trip into the basswood forests near Lynd, he was hoping he’d spot a big, 10-point buck. The Tracy man had seen the buck several times from his tree stand this fall. But the wary animal had never approached close enough for Tholen to get off a successful shot. A cold drizzle was falling from the sky, the kind of weather that sometimes makes deer come out of hiding earlier. Sure enough, a whitetail deer appeared in the clearing opposite ‘Tholen. It was a buck all right. But it was even bigger than the buck Tholen had seen previously. The deer he shot was huge — about 200 pounds — with a majestic eight-point rack.

Oct. 4, 1995 — One year ago, the first residents began moving into the brand-new O’Brien Court complex in Tracy. The senior apartment complex adjacent to Tracy Municipal Hospital had 19 apartments filled at the time of its October grandopening. One year later, 26 of 30 apartments are occupied. All but two of the original of tenants are still O’Brien Court residents. “It’s been working out just great,” comments Val McKinney, O’Brien Court coordinator. “People really seem to enjoy living here.”

Oct. 5, 2005 — The Tracy Economic Development Authority (EDA) has purchased the Downtown Tracy building that once housed Stassen Photography. The EDA paid $2,500 for the building at the Lyon County auction for tax forfeited property last week. The EDA’s bid was the sole offer submitted for the property. Robert Gervais, Tracy Community Development director, reports that the Tracy Economic Development Authority hopes re-sell the property to someone interested in operating a business in the building. He indicated that he has prospects for the building, but nothing definite.
