Sports Flashbacks

Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers 

Oct. 20, 1955 — Paced by a hardcharging forward wall, Tracy defeated Clarkfield 13-6. Roger Kerr slung a scoring pass to Red Sammons from 40 yards out. Kerr scored the other Scapper touchdown a few plays after a blocked punt.

Oct. 21, 1965 — Jerry Kathman stole the show in the 8th annual Red and Blue Bowl last Thursday night by scoring three times to lead the Blues to a 20-7 victory. Ron McDaniel had an interception and Kathman had one as well, returning it 22 yards for a score.

Oct. 16, 1975 — Coach Ron Borchert’s Balaton football team won 36-14 over Hendricks. Kicker Dave Wieme, quarterback Jon Nelson and receiver Dallas Sanderson shared the limelight in Balaton’s second-half surge after the Warriors trailed 8-0 late in the first half.

Oct. 17, 1985 — It’s not over until the final seconds have ticked off the clock. The Tracy Scrappers found out just how true the old philosophy is as Minneota came back from a 14-6 deficit to hand Tracy its fourth Southern Sioux Conference loss. Tracy had the lead with 1:24 to go and Minneota backed up to its 20 yard line, but the Scrappers couldn’t hold on. The Vikings threw to Byron Sharp for 25 yards, and three downs later a pass up the middle to Bob De Sutter brought the Vikings down to the Tracy 13. The TD came on a pass from Chris Meidt to Mark Bott in the right comer of the endzone. Tim Goerish connected with Tom Nelson for a TD pass that gave Tracy an early 7-6 lead.

Oct. 18, 1995 — Daisy Schmidt led the Tracy-Milroy girls’ cross country team in a five-team meet at Slayton Tuesday. The senior took 11 seconds off of her previous best time, touring the 4,000-meter course in 16:10. She finished 10th in the 30-runner varsity field. Balaton junior Leah Gifford captured took first place, with a winning time of 14:47. She was followed by Murray County Central runners Lucy Hafner, Carillon Andert and Cassie Schwartz.

Oct. 19, 2005 — The Panther volleyball team took third in a tournament at Alexandria Saturday. Jackie Haecherl was 37 of 38 serving with nine aces, Emily Miller was 32 of 33 with six aces, Molly Miller was 33 of 35 with five aces, Krysta Tholen was 25 of 29 and Michele Lanoue was 25 of 29 with two aces.

Oct. 21, 2015 — Panther volleyball players got a chance to test their skills against the Class A A A Worthington Trojans, and came away with a threeset home win Thursday. Syd Lanoue had 11 kills, and Gabbie Gervais served 16-for-16 and had 21 assists.
