Nov. 18, 1965 — LeRoy Otto, city engineer, said yesterday he and his city crew will again establish two ice rinks in the city—one in the midtown park, the other in Greenwood. Flooding of rinks, however, is dependent upon a stretch of cold weather so that the ground will hold, rather than absorb water. Youngsters have the assurance the rinks will be made ready just as soon as weather permits. In the meantime, the kids might dig out their blades and sharpen them in readiness for the season’s ice-skating sport.
Nov. 13, 1975 — Gordon Affield says he didn’t really plan a write-in campaign for last week’s municipal election at Milroy. “They kind of planned it for me,” Affield said last week. And “they” refers to 64 voters who used writein votes to beat incumbent mayor Francis Zupfer by three regular votes. “It had been talked of quite a bit and it brought the vote out,” said city clerk Erma Dysart of the write-in campaign for Affield. She said 131 voters cast ballots, a relatively good turnout compared to past municipal elections. There are 165 eligible voters in Milroy. The Milroy City Council will also have a new face, Jerry Geske, who recently became the father of a daughter, Geske bested incumbent David Barber by an 84-31 vote margin.

Nov. 12, 1985 — When Ed and Mary Lenertz’s grandson, Joe Schons, went digging for worms, he had no idea that he’d find what he did. Schons a 9-year old from Fairmont was digging for worms when his shovel hit something. The “something” turned out to be a bayonet. Although he didn’t know what it was at the time, he kept it. He took it to school, St. John Vianney School, to show his friends where he was told it was a very old bayonet. The markings on the metal are a “US” and a “77.” It is reported that the Martin County Historical Society’s Pioneer Museum has bayonets like the Schons’ and they are from the Civil War period. The Schons don’t know how it got to their back yard, and probably never will know, but they do hope to find out how old it is.
