UMN Extension will be offering a cattle Artificial Insemination (A.I.) School in Pipestone on Dec. 11-13.
The 2.5-day school will be a combination of classroom learning and hands-on experience, including instructor-led practices in the classroom with harvested reproductive tracts as well as practice inseminating live cows at a local dairy.
The first day of school will consist of classroom training pertaining to A.I. techniques, reproductive tract anatomy, heat detection, A.I. equipment, and semen handling.
On the second and third days, morning sessions will focus on practicing hands-on A.I. techniques at Zeinstra Dairy. The afternoon sessions will include classroom training on topics such as: semen handling and deposition; bovine anatomy and estrus cycle; estrus detection & synchronization; nutrition; genetic selection; vaccination protocols for reproductive success; utilizing sensors & technology; and stressors impacting pregnancy rates.
This course will be offered in two educational tracks — beef and dairy — allowing participants to choose the content most applicable to their operation. While certain topics (e.g., semen handling, anatomy, and synchronization protocols) will be covered jointly, track-specific sessions will dive deeper into areas such as nutrition, genetic selection, crossbreeding objectives, and stressors that uniquely affect either beef or dairy herds.
The cost per participant is $550 with payment due at registration. Due to the handson nature of this course and the guaranteed time each participant will spend breeding cows, class size will be VERY LIMITED! Register ASAP to reserve your spot today! When registration spots are filled, any additional registrants will be put on a waitlist in the event of cancellations.
