Remember When

Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers 

Nov. 24, 1955 — James Moran, a rural mail carrier in the Tracy area for nearly 37 years, made his last run Saturday before entering retirement. Patrons of rural route one, the route that Moran served during his entire career as a mail carrier, presented him with an easy chair, footstool and reading lamp in appreciation for his years of service.

Dec. 2, 1965 — Mr. and Mrs. Edson Starr are new officers of Tracy Bowl, taking over the establishment from Mr. and Mrs. Bob Wisher, who operated the Morgan St. recreation place the last four years.

Nov. 20, 1975 — Currie’s popular End-O-Line Railroad Park received another shot in the arm last week when a $3,500 grant for further development of the park was approved by the Minnesota Bicentennial Commission. Grants for Currie and Pipestone were the only two from southwestern Minnesota. Mrs. Hugh Gervais, chairman of the Currie Bicentennial Program which includes the railroad park, said the money will be used for continued restoration of the depot and track turntable. Work will resume next spring.

Nov. 19, 1985 — Add Tracy native Daine (Lenertz) Knakmuhs to your list of published poets. Carton Press of New York published a collection of prose and poem writing by the 1971 Tracy High School graduate.

Nov. 22, 1995 — A new era in Tracy medical care began last week. Effective Nov. 15, the privately-owned Apostol Medical Clinic and the cityoperated Tracy Medical Clinic became one. The two clinics are now merged into one operation, with the facility leased and managed by Sioux Valley Service Corporation of Sioux Falls, S.D.

Nov. 23, 2005 — Tracy Area High School students and parents have a new way to stay updated this year. TAHS teachers now have their own websites. The sites contain information such as course descriptions, grading schemes, and basic information on what to expect in class. Teachers Katie Gervais and Teresa Timmerman worked with the high school teachers on creating these websites, said district technology coordinator Nan Ladehoff.

Nov. 25, 2015 — This year’s Tracy Area Public Schools’ Wall of Fame inductees are Dave Stassen, Con Rettmer and Jim Vickerman. Randy McIntire was honored as the high school’s “teacher of the year,” while Amber Altheide was the selection for Tracy Elementary School. Gale Otto was given the school district’s Lifetime Service Award.
