Remember When

Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers

Dec. 22, 1955 — Approximately 2,000 children of the Tracy area thronged the high school auditorium Saturday to visit with Santa Claus and take in the Jay Gould Nicholas Holiday circus, sponsored by the Civic and Commerce association. Although icy winds prevented having the circus outdoors as previously scheduled, a record number of youngsters and their parents crammed the auditorium to see the show. It was necessary to hold two showings of the circus to take care of the overflow Obituaries: Roy Andrew, Mrs. Leo Beeusaert

Dec. 16, 1965 — A Dovray young farmer was surprisingly casual and nonchalant when contacted about winning $2,000 cash from the Minneapolis Tribune for correctly solving last Sunday’s Prizeword Puzzle No. 549. Winston Johnson, 35, is recipient of the $2,000 award and he would have picked up another $200 bonus for a postcard entry instead of mailing a facsimile entry in an envelope.

Obituaries: Mrs. Nick Thomas, Randy Lee Lanoue, Warren Schadt

Dec. 19, 1975 — More discussion of possibly closing the Currie Elementary School because of declining enrollments highlighted Tuesday’s meeting of the Tracy School Board, and more such discussion is expected to lead meetings over the next few months. The Currie school issue will be formally placed on the agenda for the school board meeting of Tuesday, Feb. 3. Elementary enrollment projections through the 1980-81 school term were presented to the board by Principal Vernon Grinde. This year’s enrollment at Currie is 31 students, and next year its projected to drop to 29 students. School board members indicated that two years ago they agreed to give the school continued life, and there would be more consideration of possible closing if the enrollment dipped below 40. Board members Jim Malone and Bill Woodruff felt strongly in having the Currie school placed on the February agenda.

Obituaries: Mrs. Warren Turner, Art Mathews, Charles Johnson Jr.

Dec. 19, 1985 — The Walnut Grove school board voted 5-2 last week for the district to enter into a cooperative pairing agreement with Westbrook schools for the 1986-88 school years. The board’s motion calls for Westbrook and Walnut Grove to cooperatively sponsor all secondary athletic activities, except volleyball, high school girls’ basketball, high school track during 1986-88, and to cooperatively sponsor high school varsity football in 1987. A motion that Walnut Grove cooperatively sponsored junior and senior high football with Milroy for the next three years was defeated by a 4-3 vote. A motion to pair with Milroy for girls’ basketball was also defeated.

Dec. 21, 1995 — Spanish will be offered “in-house” to Tracy High School students next fall. As the result of a Tracy school board decision Monday, students will be able to register for either French or Spanish classes next year. Both classes will be held “on-site” at THS if enough students register. At the present, THS offers a four-year French program taught by Shorty Engel. Two years of Spanish is offered over an Interactive television network.

Dec. 21, 2005 — Soccer could be offered as a Minnesota State High School League sport as soon as the fall of 2006 at Tracy Area High School. Activities Director Bill Tauer gave the District 417 school board a proposal for the soccer program last week. Tauer said the goal is to create a team of TMB and Westbrook-Walnut Grove players. It is estimated that there would be just a varsity team at first, with around 14 Tracy players and an additional six Westbrook-Walnut Grove players. If there are enough participants, a B-squad team would be added.

Dec. 23, 2015 — Dr. Louisa Paul has mixed emotions this week, as she packs up her Sanford Tracy office, in preparations for the next stage in her career. “It’s bittersweet. I am really going to miss all of my patients, and all of the people I have worked with. Tracy has been very welcoming.” But the physician is also looking forward to her new position at the Fairview Hiawatha Medical Clinic in South Minneapolis. “I am going to be closer to family,” Dr. Paul relates, referring to the cousins and extended family members she has in the Twin Cities.
