Name That Year

“Name that Year” is designed to put your knowledge of Tracy and its newsmakers of the past to the test. Each week, we will publish a news item that ran in a past edition — maybe it was a major event, or a story about a Tracy resident — it’s up to you to determine in what year that particular news item hit the pages of the paper:

• A THIRD GENERATION JOINED SALMON CHEVROLETOLDSMOBILE IN TRACY IN THE WINTER OF THIS YEAR.

Jeff Salmon, a graduate of Tracy High School, has begun working for the dealership. He will be involved primarily in the firm’s parts and service department, but will also assist his father, Dean, in the management of the business.

Following high school, the younger Salmon attended Moorhead State University for two years before beginning work at Vem Eide Mercedes-Buick in Sioux Falls, SD, For the past 2 1/2 years, Salmon has been an agent for The Equitable life insurance company in Sioux Falls.

“I’ve always enjoyed the smalltown atmosphere,” commented Jeff.

“So when the chance came to get back into the automobile business with my father in Tracy, I thought it looked like a good opportunity.”

Jeff Salmon recently moved from Sioux Falls to an apartment in Tracy.

The General Motors dealership has been in the Salmon family since 1952. In May of that year, Guy Salmon purchased the dealership from Jack Reyer and Joe Speth. In 1962, Dean Salmon, a 1957 THS graduate, joined the Tracy firm. The company celebrated its 35th anniversary.

• Last week’s answer: Then a third-year University of Minnesota dental student, Jon Heezen said in 2011 that he is making plans for opening a dental clinic in Tracy.
