Dec. 29, 1955 — Because of dangerously low oxygen content, state conservation officials this week ordered fish rescue operations in Lake Sarah and opened several other southwestern Minnesota lakes for promiscuous fishing. State fish removal crews early this week made two hauls in Lake Sarah south of Garvin, rescuing many large-size northerns. Rough fish taken in the nets were mostly suckers and only a few carp. “Tuesday one truck load of northerns was removed and the following day two more truck loads of the game fish were taken to state holding ponds at Waterville.

Dec. 30, 1965 — Funeral services for Airman 3-C Dennis Peterson, 21, of this city, who with an air force companion died from injuries received in an automobile accident near Fontana, CA, last Thursday, were held at 2 o’clock Monday from Tracy Lutheran church.

Dec. 24, 1975 — A large group of persons attended an open house last Friday afternoon for Julie Princen who is retiring after 47 years with the Lyon County Extension Service. She started work in the office in July 1928 and will retire on Wednesday, Dec. 31. Mrs. Louie (Nola) Caron will be her successor. During her 7 years, Miss Princen handled the records of an estimated 30,000 4-H boys and girls throughout the county.

Dec. 31, 1985 — Livestock, farm equipment and grain were destroyed in a bam fire on the David and Eunice Engen farm south of Tracy Christmas Eve. No official estimate of the damages had been made last week. But Engen thought it could run to the neighborhood of $80,000. Destroyed in the blaze was a 40x60-foot bam. At the time of the fire, the structure held 40 sows, some straw and hay, and a horse. A silo next to the barn, also damaged in the fire, was full of corn. The Tracy Fire Department was called to the Engen farm, six miles south of Tracy, at about midnight Christmas Eve.

Greenfield’s “Court of Honor” is set Wednesday, Dec. 27 at 7:30 p.m. An open house reception follows the program, which is being held at Tracy Lutheran Church. Taking part in the program will be Mina Atkins, Joe Stefanick, Paulette Stefanic, Chris Winter, Mike Greenfield, David Spencer, George Sealt, Eric Stefanick and Pastor Cy Solberg.

Dec. 28, 2005 — The Tracy Chamber of Commerce’s search for a new manager has taken an unexpected turn. The Chamber position will not be combined with a parttime Walnut Grove economic development job, as previously planned. Lori Hebig, Tracy Chamber board president, said Monday that the Walnut Grove Economic Development Authority has withdrawn from the joint-job proposal. “The funding that they had planned on was cut,” Hebig said. The Tracy Chamber and the Walnut Grove EDA had advertised a full-time job opportunity, with 30 hours allocated to Tracy and 10 hours set for Walnut Grove.

Dec. 30, 2015 — Has the Red Rooster served its last slab of Peanut Butter Cream Pie? Donna Caron hopes not. She would like to see buyer emerge for the iconic Hwy. 14 restaurant and truck stop, so that hungry diners will again slide into its red booths for pie and coffee, or a Farmers’ Skillet. But she says that she and her husband, Robert, who have operated the Red Rooster since 2003, could no longer afford to keep the establishment open.
