Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers 

Jan. 3, 1956 — An estimated 2,000 people viewed wreckage of the Aeronca plane owned and piloted by Ernest Beach, Currie semi-retired farmer who was killed in the crash Monday while fox hunting with Perne Silvernale, Currie cafe man. The latter is recovering from serious and extensive injuries. Elso Veenhuis was deputized to protect the wreckage until civil aeronautics completed their investigation Tuesday.

Obituaries: Clara Jones

Jan. 6, 1966 — Blake Nehls of Tracy, representing the Fifth district, was elected chairman of county commissioners for the year 1966 at the two-day re-organization session of the board held Tuesday and Wednesday. Nehls succeeds Joe Brewers who headed the board during the past year. The new chairman previously headed the board in 1963.

Jan. 1, 1976 — John Peterson, equipment man with the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. in Tracy, recently completed a nineweek course at the company’s training center in Des Moines. Iowa. The course included equipment training in circuit analysis and clearing trouble in office switching equipment. Peterson will be maintaining the central office equipment in Tracy. Peterson resides in the City View Park of Tracy.

Jan. 7, 1986 — The Tracy school board will meet Wednesday (Jan. 8) to discuss the possibility of an extracurricular pairing agreement between the Milroy and Tracy school districts. Committees representing the two schools met last week after Milroy decided to explore the options Tracy has to offer. The Milroy board of education had previously voted to explore a joint powers agreement with Tracy for all extra-curricular athletic events beginning in the 1986-1987 school year.

Jan. 3, 1996 — Parishioners at St. Paul’s Catholic Church of Walnut Grove and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Tracy have a new staff member. Father Joseph Deizel is assisting Father Douglas Grams in serving the congregations. “I am what you could describe as a hired hand. I gave a service at O’Brien Court and the Tracy Nursing Home last week. I will do whatever is needed,” Father Deizel explained. “I hope to become acquainted with the members of the churches and get out and do some visiting.”

Jan. 4, 2006 — With an assist from Tracy police, the Minnesota State Highway Patrol got their man in Tracy last week. Roger Rolfes, permanent address unknown, was arrested in a downtown alley Dec. 28 after attempting to flee from a state trooper near Garvin. A high-speed chase came to an end in Tracy, when the suspect’s vehicle spun out of control on South Street. The suspect fled on foot a short distance before being apprehended by Tracy Police Chief Bryan Hillger and Officer Jason Lichty.

Jan, 6, 2016 — A Wildlife Management Area just five miles from Marshall is in the process of development in an attempt to create grass on the terrain and a fertile home for wildlife. The Lyon County Commissioners approved transfer Lake Marshall Township land, which includes a plot in Sodus Township to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for water and conservation purposes.

ERNIE SURPRENANT, who served in Germany during farms, in 1966, received a prayer book he left behind in a the public in a Naumburg home where he was billeted. With return of the prayer book, L. Marulm stated in his short note: “I don’t know if there lives anybody who missed this book; But I’ll try and send it off to the address I found inside. This book was left in our house in 1945. Now I found it again between my old books. Here it is with best wishes.” Looking over the book, given to Ernie by his mother when he left for service in 1942, are Mrs. Surprenant and Tgm and Jerry.
