TMB/WWG locks horns with highly-ranked Minneota, KMS
The improvement of the TMB/WWG wrestling team is evident in its overall record, but also with the Panthers’ performance at the triangular they hosted Tuesday.
Two elite Class A teams were in town earlier this week, and the Panthers, despite being shorthanded because of illnesses, stood their ground. TMB/WWG lost to highlyranked KMS, 35-30, and to the fifthranked team in Class A, Minneota, 44-29.
“The KMS one was frustrating,” TMB/WWG coach Karl Campbell said. “We really thought we had opportunities to get that one, even without not having both the Martens (Weston and Nevin) today. With a couple of those matchups, that would’ve been a big difference for us. With that said, we still had some chances. When it ends up being as close as it was, as a coach, you end up second-guessing some things.”
The Panthers got down 10- after two bouts, but the tide turned when Logan Petersen pinned Colin Peters at 121 pounds. After that, Taylor Squires, Mua Vang and David Schuh all recorded wins. Then the pendulum swung the other way with the Saints picked up 25 points over the next five matches.
At 215 pounds, Lawton Verlinde won a 5-0 decision, and Jack Willhite won a forfeit, but it was too little too late for the Panthers.
“Mua did a really nice job filling in for Weston at 133 on a kid that Weston had pinned a week ago,” Campbell said. “Maybe if we had Weston that’s six our way instead of three, but Mua was literally inches away from putting him down; if we get that, it kind of changes the mindset of matchups.”
TMB/WWG got off to another slow start against the Vikings, before Petersen once again stopped the bleeding with a pin over Landon Pohlen, the 50th pin of his career. Squires followed with another pin to put the Panthers up 12-9. It was backand-forth after that, with Schuh and Tyler Arnold getting a fall and a tech. fall, at 139 and 152, respectively for a 23-20 Panther advantage. However, two falls put Minneota up 32-23. Lawton Verlinde gave TMB/WWG hope by pinning Sam Myhre at 189, but the Vikings earned falls in the last two bouts to seal the win.

“I was happy with how Tyler came out and responded to an opportunity … it’s been kind of a rollercoaster ride for him, and we need a senior to wrestle like he did against Minneota; it was good to see that,” Campbell said. “Our seniors — our leaders like Logan, Taylor, David and Lawton — all performed very well in both duals.”
Petersen earned his 50th pin Tuesday, and Nolan Verlinde got his 50th career victory this past weekend.
TMB/WWG is 10-3 after winning 11 matches last season. The Panthers will wrestle in Sheldon, IA, on Saturday.
