Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers
Jan. 19, 1956 — Marshall’s unbeaten Tiger basketball team shrugged off a first period scare from an underdog Tracy quint Friday and rolled to a 54-33 victory. Top scorers in the tilt found Dan Welsh with 9, and Tom Hansen and Phil Hassenstab with 8 apiece.
Jan. 20, 1966 — Tracy’s Scrappers watched a 17-point lead disappear but staved off a determined Walnut Grove rally to win an 88-86 victory on the Logger court Tuesday night. Top scoring honors, however, went to 6-8 Tom Masterson. The Logger center got 42 points; 15 came in the final period.
Jan. 15, 1976 — Milroy rolled to its seventh girls’ basketball win of the season 45-22 over Echo Monday night on the Spartans home floor. Janette Dolan and Rita Dolan both scored eight points.
Jan. 21, 1986 — Despite missing six one-and-one opportunities in the final 45 seconds, the Walnut Grove Loggers held on to beat the Sanborn-Lamberton Rebels 50-48. The closest the Rebels could come was one point in the final few seconds. Charlie Baumann was high man for the Loggers with 18 points, who upped their record to 2-8. Mark Anderson scored 14 points and grabbed 18 rebounds. Dan Peterson also reached the double figure mark with 10 points.
Jan. 17, 1996 — The Panther boys improved their season record to 4-5 with a convincing 78-55 win over Hills-Beaver Creek at Tracy Saturday night. Scott Zick led the Panther offense with 22 points, followed by Jared Peterreins with 16.
Jan. 18, 2006 — A strong Canby team topped Tracy-Milroy-Balaton wrestlers 45-17 Thursday at Canby. The loss was the Panthers’ first dual meet loss after 12 straight wins. The Panthers stayed right with the Lancers in the early going. After Drew Hebig’s win at 140 pounds the score was 15-14 in favor of Canby. However, only Paul Carlson at 189 pounds would get another win for TMB.
