Remember When

Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers Jan. 19, 1956 — Saturday evening, Thos. B. Hicks of the Tracy Masonic lodge, received the rank of decoration of Knight Commander of the Court of Honor. The investiture was held in the Scottish Rite temple, Minneapolis, under the direction of Dr. William B. Roberts, 33rd degree, Grand Cross of Honor and Sovereign grand inspector general of Scottish Rite Masons for the state of Minnesota. H. C. Reed, Slayton, was also in the class of 44 Minnesota Masons who received this honor.

Jan. 20, 1966 — Vern Hemmingsen and Robert Velta were named by C&C President Bruce Cottington as co-chairmen of the current C&C membership campaign, which it is hoped to be completed successfully next weekend.

Jan. 15, 1976 — Twentyeight- year-oldSandyLudeman of rural Tracy announced Monday that he will seek the Independent Republican Party endorsement for state representative of District 20-B (Lyon and Lincoln counties). “My decision to seek (the endorsement) came after several businessmen, farmers and educators of the Lincoln-Lyon county area approached me and said they felt a change in representation was needed,” Ludeman told the Headlight Herald.

Jan. 21, 1986 — Harold “Whitey” Engesser has finally received the medals he earned from Worid War II. The nine medals received which finally reached Whitey were the Expert Rifleman, Bronze Star, good conduct (My wife didn’t believe, that one! Whitey quipped.) American Campaign, Asiatic/ Pacific Campaign, Worid War II Victory medal. Combat Infantry Badge, Phillipine Liberation ribbon, and Honorable Service.

Obituaries: Richard Scoffer, Chad VanLoy, Byron Sweely, Albert Drake Jan. 17, 1996 — An upward trend in Tracy crime statistics continued during 1995. Assault, burglary, auto theft, alcohol-related offenses, damage to property and theft cases all rose significantly during 1995. Compared with 1994, assaults rose from 19 to 25 in 1995. Burglaries rose from 17 to 21 and DWI tickets increased from 17 to 28. Damage to property complaints rose from 46 to 80, while disorderly conduct cases increased from 10 to 27. Theft cases rose from 43 to 76. “We were plenty busy,” commented Police Chief Bryan Hillger. “I hope these numbers are down this next year.” Overall, Hillger estimates that crime in Tracy has risen about 50% over the past 3-5 years.

Jan. 18, 2006 — The new executive director of the Tracy Chamber of Commerce spent her first day on the job meeting people. Kayla Hussong, 23, was introduced to many Chamber board members and business owners on a tour of Tracy Tuesday morning. Chamber Board President Lori Hebig provided the introductions. Hussong is a recent graduate of St. Cloud State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in community development. Before coming to Tracy, Hussong completed an internship with the Alexandria Economic Development Authority.
