Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers 

Jan. 26, 1956 — A proposal to enlarge the Tracy school district by consolidation with all the school districts now being served by the Tracy school system is in the making, and will possibly be put to a vote sometime this spring, according to George Borneman, superintendent of Tracy independent school district 30. The decision was reached at a meeting of the Tracy school board last Thursday night, and is the result of a last spring conference with school beard officials of all school districts involved.

Jan. 27, 1966 — Members of the city council took definite steps to improve the city’s water supply by letting bids for digging of a new well and then decided to seek bids for a new water filtration system. The Tri-State Drilling Co. of Wayzata was awarded the well-drilling job on its low bid of $26,165 for the project earlier estimated would run to more than $28,000. Tri-State was low among six bidders. Highest bid was $34,867.

Jan. 22, 1976 — Kent Thomson assumed duties as president of the Tracy Area Chamber of Commerce at the organization’s annual meetingbanquew Monday evening at the Mediterranean Club in Tracy. He succeeds Roger Polfer. Jim Keul was elected vice-president and new board members arc Marvin Olson, John Cambronne and Eugene Hook. In addition to the election of officers committee reports were given by Bruce Kirkpatrick, retail trade: Dr. F. E. Robinson, industrial; Marlin Meyer, consumer relations; and Ralph Werner, education.

Jan. 28, 1986 — Dave Spencer, Jaycee member in Tracy, was recently given the “Outstanding Regional Jaycee” award. The Southwest region of the Jaycees includes over 700 current members. The award is presented to individuals who are involved in various community events and services besides being active in the Jaycees. Spencer was honored recently at the Jaycees’ banquet at the Tracy Servicemen’s Center.

Jan. 24, 1996 — Jim and Melissa Christian of rural Currie will never forget the Jan. 18 blizzard of 1996. Their second child was born during the blizzard. The Christians, who live two miles north of Tracy, had the foresight to drive to Marshall Wednesday afternoon and stay in the Super 8 Motel. However, when Melissa went into labor Thursday, they found they could not get their vehicle out of the motel parking lot. After contacting Weiner Memorial Hospital personnel and relating their predicament, the hospital arranged for a snow plow to come to the motel.

Jan. 25, 2006 — The City of Tracy is seeking proposals for a new garbage collection contract. Ritter’s Sanitary Service of Marshall now has an exclusive contract for residential and commercial garbage services in Tracy. The five-year contract between Ritter’s and the City ends June 30 of this year. City council members accepted a recommendation from City Administrator Audrey Koopman to issue a “request for proposal” from prospective haulers.

Jan. 27, 2016 — Six decades of municipal ownership of the Tracy hospital and clinic complex is about to end. Tracy City Council members have given their blessings to an agreement that transfers ownership of the city’s hospital and clinic property to the Sioux Falls-based Sanford Health Network. A formal transfer of ownership is expected next week.
