GIRLS PUT UP VALIANT FIGHT AGAINST VIKINGS

Minneota holds off TMB 63-58 to end Panthers’ winning streak

The TMB girls’ basketball team’s stretch of four straight home games might have ended with a loss last Friday, but the final score to a perennial powerhouse said just as much about the progress the team has made then the three wins before it.

The Panthers fought hard but fell 63-58 to a 12-win Minneota team that had won its previous four games.

“I really liked how the girls approached it tonight, and really liked their battle and their toughness,” TMB coach Derek Ashbaugh said. “Just not enough defensive execution at the end there to finish things up.”

That showed in the last 11 minutes, with the Panthers not being able to stop the Vikings. The game was tied at 41, but TMB was unable to tie or take the lead the rest of the game.

Ashbaugh had some promising thoughts on what the last part of the season could bring.

“I like how the girls have made some adjustments, and hopefully we can be able to see that progress,” he said.

The Vikings started well jumping to a 8-2 lead, but the Panthers fought back, tying it up at 12 and not letting the Vikings get comfortable.

The Panthers and Vikings traded blows, reaching halftime with Minneota exercising a four-point lead at 32-28. The scoring ramped up with around 13 minutes left with the Panthers taking a lead at 38-37, but Minneota would not go away. The score would never differ by more than eight points the entire game, with TMB having to play the foul game at the end as the Vikings held off the home team.

Gretchen Lanoue led the way with 20 points, and also had nine rebounds and four steals. Melaina Ankrum pitched in with 12 points and also pulled down 10 rebounds. Braelynn Kirk added eight points, and Alli Dolan scored five.

The TMB defense forced 25 turnovers, but the Panthers were outrebounded 48-30.

• TMB had stretched their winning streak to three with a 6153 win over Southwest Christian last Thursday. For the second straight game, Lanoue and Ankrum both passed the 20-point mark with 21 and 20 points, respectively. Lanoue also had 14 rebounds, five assists and four steals, and Ankrum had seven rebounds, five steals and three assists.

Dolan added 11 points and Elsie Knott snatched six rebounds.
