Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers
March 1, 1956 — Tracy dumped Ruthton 50-38 in the first round of the subdistrict tournament in Cottonwood. Tom Hansen and Lyle Engesser scored 13 and 12 points, respectively for the Scrappers.
March 3, 1966 — More than 2,400 persons saw Balaton and big Carl Johnson nip Tracy 66-59 in a nip-and-tuck battle that wasn’t decided until the final minute. Carl Johnson, big 6’9” Balaton center, was “held” to 32 points but it was the freeshooting of another Johnson named Bill that overturned the Scrappers. Bill hit 11 free throws, five in the crucial final stanza, to cap the win.
March 3, 1976 — Two wins and two losses — that was Dave Coyle’s record in the Minnesota State High School Wrestling Tournament held last week at the St. Paul Civic Center. The 155-pound Tracy High School star didn’t place in the tournament, but won his first and third matches and finished the season with an overall record of 24-2.
March 4, 1986 — The Milroy Spartans, paced by sophomore Mary Jo Miller’s 23 points, captured the District 9 title Saturday night by defeating upsetminded Hendricks 56-49. The win, played before a full house in Canby, was Milroy’s third title in four years. Milroy will now advance to the Region 3A Tournament, taking on a District 10 champion Sanborn-Lamberton Thursday night in Montevideo. Kathy Dolan added 11 points.
Feb. 28, 1996 — The Tracy-Milroy girls advanced to the finals of the Sub Section 2 tournament with a 78-44 win over Balaton at Marshall Monday night. Chris Brink led all scorers with 30 ,points. She was followed by Nadine Brandt with 27, including seven three-point baskets. Kari Swenson led Balaton with 24 points.
March 1, 2006 — Three Panther wrestlers are headed for the state wrestling tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul Thursday through Saturday. Luke Prairie (119), Cole Cooreman (125) and Paul Carlson (171) all won championships at the Section 3AA wrestling tourney at Redwood Falls Friday and Saturday. Derek Evans (130) and James Prairie (160) came close by placing third in sections.
March 2, 2016 — Logan Axford wrapped up a championship season with everything but a gold medal Saturday. The 145-pound senior wrestler walked off the mat at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul as the Panthers’ all-time career pin leader with 109, and second in career victories. His career record of 184-37 is second only to 2011 Panther grad Zach Campbell.
