“Name that Year” is designed to put your knowledge of Tracy and its newsmakers of the past to the test. Each week, we will publish a news item that ran in a past edition — maybe it was a major event, or a story about a Tracy resident — it’s up to you to determine in what year that particular news item hit the pages of the paper:
• CITY OF TRACY VOTERS OVERWHELMINGLY SUPPORTED A $1.5 MILLION SWIMMING POOL BOND REFERENDUM IN FEBRAURY OF THIS YEAR.
By more than a three to one margin, city voters gave the Tracy City Council the authority to borrow up to $1.5 million in bonds to finance an outdoor family aquatic center in Sebastian Park.
A total of 501 “yes” votes were cast, with 165 people voting “no.” The 666 people who cast ballots in the referendum represented 52% of the city’s 1,275 election day registered voters. The 666 voters included 51 voters who registered.
The referendum results mean that planning for the new aquatic center will intensify in coming months. After final plans are drafted, bids could be sought early this summer, with contracts awarded in July. Construction could begin in late August.
The new multi-use aquatic center will replace a 50-year-old swimming pool that is now in poor condition.
• Last week’s answer: A $100,000 goal was set in 1999 for a Tracy Prairie Pavilion fund-raising campaign, which was kicked-off by a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
