Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers 

March 8, 1956 — Pat DeBlieck of this city will preside as president at the 11th annual convention of the Minnesota FFA in Minneapolis. Accompanying the state president from the local chapter will be Laurel Mickelson, Marilyn Robinson, Betty Larson, Pat Daniels, Betty Magnuson and Elizabeth Franz, chapter advisor.

March 11, 1966 — Funeral services for Perne A. Silvernale, 20, of Currie — one of the two persons fatally injured in a shooting in Mankato — will be held at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Currie. Verne Peschges, also of Currie and a student at Mankato State University, is reported to be in fair condition with arm and leg wounds.

March 4, 1976 — Two Walnut Grove men have purchase a large 2-1/2-story residence in Walnut Grove that at one time served as the Walnut Grove Nursing Home, a hotel and most recently an apartment complex. Virgil Munson and Charlie Gilb of Walnut Grove were low bidders for the house which has been most recently owned by the Federal Housing and Urban Development Department. A bid of at least $2,000 was necessary to qualify for the purchase. It’s unknown as the amount paid by Munson and Gilb. Munson said the house was re-possessed by HUD six to seven months ago and has been empty the last several years. Munson said their tentative plans would be to remodel the exterior and then offer it as a complete residence.

March 11, 1986 — Two nationally-known names in pop music — Bobby Vee and Tommy Roe — will appear at the Tracy Servicemen’s Center in Tracy next week. The dance/concert will be Tuesday, March 18, from 9 to 1 a.m. Doors will open at 7 p.m. The duo will appear with the group A.R. Stevens and the Rockin Ricochettes. Larry Bornitz, entertainment committee chairman for the Servicemen’s Center, said the event is the first in a series of top quality acts that will be coming to the Servicemen’s Center. The plan is to have one big-name performer appear at the center once a month for the balance of the year.

March 6, 1996 — Margaret Peterson, veteran Tracy High School English teacher, plans to resign at of the end of this school year. Peterson submitted a letter of resignation to the Tracy Board of Education last week. In the letter. Peterson expressed thanks to the board and students for memorable years in the school system. She indicated that after her retirement from teaching, she wants to spend time with her husband, Clint, traveling and visiting their families.

March 8, 2006 — Mai Vue Moua is a busy young lady. The A-honor roll student at Tracy Area High School is a student council officer, belongs to Peer Helpers, sings in three school choirs, and helps with the Teton yearbook. She has a part-time job, is active in the National Honor Society, and was recently crowned as the Peer Helpers “sweetheart” queen. And, oh yes, she’s also an author. An essay she wrote for a Challenge English class has been chosen for an on-line companion to the St. Martin’s Guide to Writing. Her essay, “Marriage 101,” reflects upon marriage traditions in the Hmong culture, and her memories of a beloved cousin’s marriage. “I was surprised my essay was chosen,” the Tracy 17-yearold told Tracy Kiwanis Club members last week. “I do not consider myself to be a good writer. I have trouble finding the right words.”
