WHILE DETERMINING AN “ICE OUT” ON AREA LAKES IS ANYTHING BUT AN EXACT SCIENCE, it’s safe to say the phenomenon is in full swing in the region. According to research by an avid reader of the Tracy Area Headlight Herald, the earliest-known “ice out” since 1960 came on March 6, 1987, while the latest occurred on April 26, 1972. “Ice out” conditions on Lake Shetek were reported last Wednesday, so depending on one’s definition, it could be said this year is the earliest occurrence.
