Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers

March 15, 1956 — Tom Hanson’s 170 points in 19 games paced the Tracy Scrapper basketball scoring during the 1955-56 season. He was followed by senior Dan Welsh, who scored 138 and Curt Paulsen, a sophomore, with 124.

March 17, 1966 — Big Carl Johnson had 30 and 35 points in consecutive District 9 playoff games. However, Wood Lake nipped the Warriors 61-59 for the district cage title.

March 11, 1976 — Marc Onken, Al Verdoes, Reed Johnson and Dave Wilking were Just seventh graders, Coach Dale Hatch was five years younger and the famed Scrapper ‘Rat Pack’ sparked the fans when Tracy High School last won a District 9 championship. Now, today, those same players are seniors and Hatch is closing out his 14th season. After setting another District 9 trophy beside the one of 1971, bags are packed for the Region 3A. semi-final game at the Mohawk gymnasium.

March 18, 1986 — Four Tracy High School athletes were named to the Southern Sioux Conference all-conference basketball teams for 1985-86. Named on the girls’ squad were junior Shari Heidebrink and freshman Elaine Eischens. Two other underclassmen, juniors Steve Mickelson and Doug Hatch, were named to the boys’ all conference squad. Tracy boys’ coach Bob Ladehoff was named boys’ basketball coach of the year.

March 13, 1996 — Balaton students will pair with Tracy and Milroy for girls’ cross country next fall. The pairing was approved by the Tracy school board Monday, which was first proposed by the Balaton school board. The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton athletic committee recommended the pairing. The Tracy school will be the home site for the practicing team, with the coach to be determined at a later date. The position for this newly formed team will be posted as an open position. Like other T-M-B paired sports, the cross country team will be called the Tracy-Milroy Balaton Panthers. Both Tracy-Milroy and Balaton fielded school sponsored girls’ cross-country teams for the first time last fall. A Tracy-Mihoy team had 13 participants. Balaton had about four. Balaton and Tracy-Milroy also pair in football and track.

March 15, 2006 — Award-winning Panther wrestlers this year were Andy Nelson (most improved), Chia Thao (most take-downs), Paul Carlson (co-most valuable), Zach Campbell (rookie-of-year, co-most wins by pin), Cole Cooreman (co-most valuable, co-most wins by pin).

March 16, 2016 — Tracy-Milroy-Balaton has three players on the Camden Conference South all-conference girls’ basketball team. Senior Sara Stoneberg is joined by sophomores Kaylee Kirk and Evy Dolan. Four Tracy-Milroy-Balaton boys have been named to the Camden South’s allconference team. Josh Kirk, who tallied 1,699 career points to become the all-time school scoring leader, was honored as the Camden South’s most valuable player. Fellow Panther seniors Derek Larson, and Riley Kirk, as well as junior Spencer Smith, were also named to the honors team. Panther mentor Rick Haberman was honored as the Camden South’s Coach of the Year.
