Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers 

March 15, 1956 — Four Tracy high school speech students won superior firsts in the District 9 speech contest at Marshall Tuesday and will advance into regional competition. Twenty-one Tracy students brought home 10 superior ratings in eight divisions of the contest including two alternates. Copping first place honors and regional berths were Helen Davis, manuscript; Betty Jo Cloud, discussion;, Arlene Olson, pantomine; and Harlan Manguson, extemporaneous speaking. Bob Kelley, humorous, and Mary Rogers, extemporaneous, won alternate spots. The top rating, Superior, was also bestowed on the following: Kathy Johnson, humorous; Virginia DeVetter, dramatic; Karyn Drackley, dramatic, and Sharyl Peterson, memorized oratory.

March 17, 1966 — Robert Anderson, who farms west of Tracy, was named president of the 1966 Lyon County 4-H Adult Advisors at a meeting held in the commissioners’ room of the courthouse in Marshall Monday. Other officers named to the adult advisory group were: Lawrence Olson, first vice-president; Mrs. Mike McChesney, second vice president; Mrs. Robert Meyenberg, secretary; and Louis Johnson, treasurer. They, with the Junior Officers of the 4-H Leaders Council, will be the advisory committee to work with County Agent Ray Newell and Home Agent Miss Eileen Monson on county-wide 4-H programs during 1966.

March 11, 1976 — A new attempt to secure funding for rental housing in Tracy is being pursued following notification to Southwest Shelter Inc. of Tracy that government funding of their submitted proposals is doubtful. In a joint meeting of the representatives from the Tracy Area Housing, Inc. and Southwest Shelter it was decided to form a new broadly based non-profit corporation in Tracy to make the necessary applications to the Farm Home Administration (FHA), for rural rental housing. Persons at this meeting were Dale Krog, president of Tracy Area Housing. Inc.; Dr. F E. Robinson, Connie Roemer. Marllys Salmon, Paul LaRocque. John Kern, Jim Kcul and representing Southwest Shelter, Dick Donaldson and Dr. Jack VonBokern.

March 18, 1986 — Two Tracy High School students placed high in the Minnesota State Office Education Association contest held last week in St. Paul. Deb Pool placed fourth in Information Communications I. Nancy Surprenant placed third in Records Management I; and ninth in prepared verbal communications. Two other students, Mary Jo Westphal and Missy Polzine, also competed in the contest. In the competition, Nancy gave a speech on secretaries and computers. Another test involved defining terms and placing names of people and businesses in alphabetical order.

March 13, 1996 — Two Tracy High School seniors are Section 3A finalists for the “Triple A” award. Grant Ludeman and Daisy Schmidt received the Sub-Section 2 “AAA” award last week. They received award medallions during a ceremony held at the Sub-Section boys’ basketball championship game in Marshall last Friday. The Triple A award honors Minnesota high school seniors who have excelled in three fields: academics, the arts and athletics. The program, now in its 8th year, is sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League and AAA Clubs of Minnesota.

March 15, 2006 — Six Tracy Area High School speech students made an impressive showing at the Southern Minnesota Chapter of the National Forensics League Tournament in Eagan. Senior Brad Lanoue and junior Celia Brockway advanced to the semi-final round in the dramatic duo category. The top 12 duo teams out of 24 made it into semifinals. Junior Jessica Mason made it into semi-finals in the humorous category. The top 12 humorous competitors out of 20 made it into semifinals. Sophomore Rachel Stobb just missed the semi-final round postings by three points in the dramatic interpretation category. Senior Danielle Thooft also competed in this category. Dramatic Interpretation was the largest category with 38 competitors. Freshman Skylar Carlson also competed at the tournament in the humorous interpretation category.

March 16, 2016 — The City of Tracy and the Tracy Public School District are moving ahead with a cooperative plan to improve the Veterans’ Memorial Center athletic arena. The city council accepted a school proposal Monday night, for the school district to pay for about $200,000 worth of VMC improvements, in exchange for 12 years free use of the facility. The council had previously offered 10 years of rent-free usage, while the school board had requested 15 years of rent-free activities. District 2904 now pays $17,500 annually to rent the VMC gym space.
