Name That Year

“Name that Year” is designed to put your knowledge of Tracy and its newsmakers of the past to the test. Each week, we will publish a news item that ran in a past edition — maybe it was a major event, or a story about a Tracy resident — it’s up to you to determine in what year that particular news item hit the pages of the paper:

• GARVIN CORNER REOPENED DURING THE WINTER OF THIS YEAR. The business, a familiar landmark at the intersection of Hwys. 14 and 59 north of Garvin, has been closed several years before coming to life last week. New operator of the business is Don Wilking, formerly of Tracy. He is managing the business for Tom Wisdorf of Cottonwood. In addition to groceries and gasoline, Wilking said it was possible other services could be added in the future.

A serious fire in the late 1970s gutted the Garvin Corner building, which at that time included an apartment on the second level. Wisdorf then remodeled the building into its present condition. Before it closed several years ago, Betty and Erv Oerter operated a restaurant in the building for several months.

• Last week’s answer: The Tracy City Council unanimously approved a “Community Partnership” agreement with the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad in 1999.
